Itumeleng Khune Life

Itumeleng Isaac Khune (born 20 June 1987) is a South African footballer who plays for Kaizer Chiefs in the Premier Soccer League and also the South African national team.

He is both the pilot and the captain.

In the Telkom Knockout final on December 1, 2007, Khune came to fame when saving three penalties from Esrom Nyandoro and Peter Ndlovu against Mamelodi Sundowns.

He is also known for saving a David Villa penalty and going on to make a double save in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup group stage match against Spain a day before his 22nd birthday on June 20th.

Khune was the second goalkeeper in the FIFA World Cup's history against Uruguay on June 16, 2010.

In a league win over Mpumalanga Black Aces on October 28, he is also known for his spectacular Rene Higuita scorpion kick save.

Which made rounds in England.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld has been praised for his quick reflexes and his delivery, which have been dubbed "the best you will see anywhere."

Personal life

Khune was born in Tshing, Ventersdorp, North West, as one of six children of Elias and Flora Khune. He is a descendant of Tswana. Elias, his father, played amateur football as a striker at a mine in Carletonville. Khune was in love with cricket idolizing Nicky Boje, unlike many South African players who start kicks on their hometown's gritty streets. He and his family now work in football to make a living for him and his family. He attended New Nation, Westridge, St Barnabas, and RW Fick High Schools. Lucky Khune's younger brother used to play for Chiefs and PSL's Chippa United. Khune is known as "Spider-Man" because of his reflexes and flexible goalkeeping skills. Traditional marriages took place in 2019 between Khune and his wife Sphelele Makhunga.

Itumeleng Khune Career

Club career

Khune came out as a striker when he first appeared at Chiefs in 1999, but he was forced to wear gloves after he suffered chest pains during a junior game and discovered himself reduced to a ball boy. He was spotted by youth coach Terror Sephoa who converted him to a goalkeeper after diving for balls that had missed the intended destination. In 2004, he was promoted to the first team.

After three years of waiting to see a game time, Khune finally had his chance in the early stages of the 2007–08 season after losing number one goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez to German club Arminia Bielefeld. Khune was appointed number one by then Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral, despite the fact that Emile Baron was often plagued by injuries. On August 25, 2007, he made his PSL debut against Jomo Cosmos. His first season in the top-flight was a success, with several match-winning awards for his team, as well as a series of individual awards for the Chiefs, who had the league's best defensive record with only 19 goals in 30 games.

Despite the fact that the Chiefs managed to finish third in the standings and win the MTN 8, he often failed to regain the form and consistency of the previous season.

Khune was sidelined for three months during the 2009-2010 season, giving understudie Arthur Bartman a chance to play regularly in his absence.

Khune was voted captain in October 2011, replacing Jimmy Tau. With Khune leading his side to a league and cup double, the 2012–13 season was certainly his best season ever. He was also selected into Goal.com's Goal50, a list of the top players of 2013. He was ranked 45th by Fernandinho, Robbie Keane, and Frank Lampard, and third behind Andrea Pirlo, Roman Weidenfeller, Victor Wanyama, and James Rodr who had all been ranked from 40 to 50. In 2014, he made his 200th appearance for Chiefs against the Mpuma Black Aces. He had 91 clean sheets in 199 games prior to the match, and he had played 172 games for Chiefs at the start of the season. For the second time in a row, he received the Goalkeeper of the Year award in 25 starts, defeating Moeneeb Josephs and Anssi Jakkola. He was linked to a move to Hannover 96 in July 2014. Khune was diagnosed on September 3rd with a Grade 3 stress fracture, which he had not suffered from since February 2014. His participation in the 2015 African Cup of Nations cost him his place. He was healthy to play on February 23, 2015, but he sustained a minor injury after battling Morgan Gould's studs to his ribs, which left a mark in a 4–0 victory over Edu Sports in the Nedbank Cup. After receiving two warnings in quick succession from referee Phillip Tinyane at Peter Mokaba Stadium in a 1–0 win over AmaZulu, Khune, in the 82nd minute in a game that also produced nine yellow cards, the referee was reportedly dismissed in the 82nd minute. Khune was first booked for time wasting before being granted his marching orders for protesting dissatisfaction with the decision. "I did nothing wrong," Khune posted on Twitter. These poor referees must be dealt with by you guys. "It's about time that @OfficialPSL takes steps against these referees." They've been pretty poor since the start of the season. We're unfairly portrayed unfairly for our activities on the track, but these referees are provoking us, [you] can call me names, but I stand for what is right." Khune was given five days to explain his remarks, but Khune did not issue a public apology.

Khune did not renew his deal with Kaizer Chiefs until it came to an end in June 2015, but after a lengthy period of talks, he returned to the club on July 2015, signing a new one.

International career

He was in Bafana Bafana's 2008 African Nations Cup squad but he wasn't called forward until he made his international debut against Zimbabwe on March 11, 2008. He had since been the first pick in goal by then coach Joel Santana.

At the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, Khune was the first-choice goalkeeper in South Africa's squad. In the group stages, he saved a penalty against Spanish actor David Villa.

In the first match against Mexico, Khune was selected for the 2010 FIFA World Cup as Carlos Alberto Parreira's first-choice goalkeeper and made some excellent saves. However, he was suspended against Uruguay in June 2010 after he tripped striker Luis Suárez inside the penalty area in the 77th minute. He was the second goalkeeper to be sent off in the history of the FIFA World Cup, joining Gianluca Pagliuca, who saw red in 1994. This was his first red card of his career. Khune deputized South Africa's last group match against France, where Moeneeb Josephs exploded as Bafana Bafana defeated 2–1 to regain some pride as the country's first host nation to leave the tournament at the beginning of the tournament. He regained his number one spot in the team after the World Cup, and he has maintained three straight clean sheets on international level.

In a goalless draw against Cape Verde and a 2–0 victory over Angola, Khune represented Bafana Bafana in the entire tournament of 2013 African Cup of Nations, keeping two clean sheets in a goalless draw. During the 2014 CHANGE in South Africa, he was given the captaincy in May 2013, taking over from Bongani Khumalo and captained Bafana.

Khune was selected as one of South Africa's top age athletes for the 2016 Summer Olympics in 2016. He arrived at the tournament as the international expert with the most international experience, alongside Nigeria's Mikel John Obi, who has won 75 national team caps to his name. He was instrumental in his country's first match draw against Brazil, earning a number of saves from Brazil captain Neymar.
