Ishmael Larry Smith (born July 5, 1988) is an American professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association's Washington Wizards. (NBA)

He played college basketball for Wake Forest before being undrafted in the 2010 NBA draft.

Personal life

He has three siblings, two sisters and one brother, as the son of Gwen and Larry Smith. Smith is a devout Christian with a degree in religion. During the national anthem before games, he reads the Bible often and prays.

High school career

Smith was a student at Central Cabarrus High School under Scott Brewer. He averaged 24.8 points and 9.8 assists per game as a senior and helped Central Cabarrus to a 25-33 record and a MECA–6 Conference regular season and tournament championship in 2006, all-conference awards, and being named Piedmont Player of the Year by the Charlotte Observer's (he also received the last two awards as a junior).

When he first graduated, he was ranked No. 1 in the United States. According to Rivals.com, the 28 point guard in the country has been rated as the No. 1 by Scout.com, despite being rated as the country's No. 1 by Scout.com. The No. 17 point guard and the No. 67 are the same. According to the 82 percent nationally, the 82 hope is on the rise.

College career

Smith played basketball for Wake Forest, finishing second in all-time for assists in school history. He had averages of 9.2 points, 5.1 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.26 steals in 121 games over his four years with the Deacons. He is also the first player in school history to have 1,000 (1,114) and 600 assists (612), as well as six others in his career.

Smith averaged 13.2 points, 6.0 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.68 steals as a senior. He was selected second-team All-ACC and earned second-Team All-District distinctions from the NABC. Since finishing third in the ACC and seventh nationally in assists per game in 2009-2010, Smith received the team's Murray Greason Award and Team Assists Leader award.

Professional career

Smith signed with the Houston Rockets on August 23, 2010 after going undrafted on the 2010 NBA draft. He was assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA Development League on January 17, 2011. On January 24, he was recalled by the Rockets and recalled again on February 7.

Smith and teammate Shane Battier were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Hasheem Thabeet, DeMarre Carroll, and a potential first round draft pick on February 24, 2011. Smith made 15 appearances for the Grizzlies in the 2010–11 season, all off the bench. Smith was suspended by the Grizzlies on December 14, 2011.

Smith was given a waiver by the Golden State Warriors on December 16, 2011. He started for the Warriors against the New York Knicks on December 28, replacing the injured Stephen Curry, who had scored 11 points and 4 assists. Smith was then suspended by the Warriors on January 13, 2012.

Smith signed with the Orlando Magic on February 2, 2012. He rejoined the Magic on August 15, 2012.

Smith was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Beno Udrih, Doron Lamb, and Tobias Harris on February 21, 2013.

Smith and Viacheslav Kravtsov were traded to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Caron Butler on August 29, 2013. Smith had a career-high 8 assists in his third game with the Suns, leading to a 104–98 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. In a 116-100 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on January 4, 2014, Smith tied for his career-high in assists (along with 8 points, 2 rebounds, and three steals). Smith was one of only three Suns backups to have at least two 8-assist games in less than 20 minutes in a single season; the others being Jeff Hornacek and Goran Dragi. In a 106–85 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on February 21, 2014, he scored a career-high 15 points. He was released by the Suns on July 15, 2014.

Smith was signed by the Houston Rockets on July 19, 2014. However, he was suspended by the Rockets on October 27 after playing in seven preseason games.

Smith was signed by the Oklahoma City Thunder on November 7, 2014 to assist the team in the case of multiple injuries. In order to sign him, Oklahoma City had to use a hardship waiver, one of the maximum of 15. Smith was retained on the roster after the team's hardship waiver was over, but the Thunder released Sebastian Telfair instead.

Smith was traded by the New Orleans Pelicans, along with the rights to Latavious Williams, cash considerations, and draft considerations, in exchange for further draft considerations on February 19, 2015. He was later waived by the Pelicans later that day.

Smith signed with the Philadelphia 76ers on February 22, 2015. In a loss to the Toronto Raptors on March 2, 2015, he set career-highs of 19 points and 9 assists. After purchasing Smith as their starting point guard, the 76ers' offensive numbers significantly increased, and Nerlens Noel referred to Smith as "the first true point guard I've ever played with." He scored a career-high 23 points on March 11 and April 1 on March 11 and 1. In 27.1 minutes per game for the 76ers from 2014 to 15, he averaged 12.0 points and 6.1 assists, all career highs.

Smith signed with the Washington Wizards on September 25, 2015. However, he was then suspended by the Wizards on October 24 after appearing in five preseason games.

Smith was signed off waivers by the New Orleans Pelicans on October 26, making his team's debut the next day. In a loss to the defending champion Golden State Warriors in 38 minutes off the bench, he scored 17 points and 9 assists. In a loss to the Atlanta Hawks on November 6, he scored 8 points and a then career-high 11 assists. In a 120-105 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, he notched his first double-double with 17 points and a career-high 12 assists, marking the Pelicans' first victory of the season. In a 104–90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, he tied for assists for the third time on November 20, scoring 17 points and 13 assists.

Smith was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for two future second-round draft picks on December 24, 2015. In his first game back for the 76ers two days later, he scored 14 points and helped the team win by 111-104 over the Phoenix Suns, their second game of the season. In a loss to the Toronto Raptors on January 9, 2016, he scored a career-high 28 points. He scored 18 of the 76ers' 25 third quarter points in that game. In a 119–113 double overtime loss to the New York Knicks on January 18, he recorded 16 points and a career-high 16 assists.

Smith signed with the Detroit Pistons on July 8, 2016, marking his tenth team he has played for in seven seasons. In a 114-108 overtime victory over the Charlotte Hornets on February 23, 2017, he had 15 assists off the bench, becoming the first Detroit player to have at least 15 assists in a reserve position since Kevin Porter had 19 in January 1977. Smith led the Miami Heat to 111–107 victory over the Miami Heat on February 3, 2018. Smith had 25 points in a 111–107 win over the Miami Heat. He started 11 of 14 on the field and fell three points shy of his career high, his previous season high was 19 points. In a 118-116 victory over the Chicago Bulls on October 20, 2018, he scored all 15 of his points in the second half, including the game-winning basket. After missing 19 games with a torn adductor muscle, he returned to action against the Utah Jazz on January 14, 2019. In his third game back, he aggravated the injury.

Smith signed with the Washington Wizards on July 9, 2019, scoring 7 points in his first game with the team. Smith's was part of the 11th team he played for in the previous eight seasons.

Smith, 20,21, signed with the Charlotte Hornets, his hometown team. Smith became the only players to play for 12 different NBA franchises, joining Joe Smith, Chucky Brown, Jim Jackson, and Tony Massenburg as the only three players to play for 12 different NBA franchises.

Smith and Vernon Carey Jr. were traded back to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Montrezl Harrell on February 10, 2022.

Smith was traded by the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Monté Morris and Will Barton on July 6, 2022. Smith made his NBA debut on October 19, 2022, making him the youngest player in the NBA to play for 13 NBA franchises.
