Washington is of African descent. He has written a book titled A Man From Another Country, which chronicles Washington's rise, TV, and film career, as well as his quest to find his roots after going through a DNA test that found his ancestors came from Sierra Leone, West Africa. African Ancestry, Inc.'s genetic genealogy test revealed that Washington's maternal ancestry can be traced to what is now Sierra Leone, and that he has a long lineage to the Mende and Temne peoples there. Since learning about his history, Washington has travelled to Sierra Leone, donated medical equipment to a hospital there, and built a school. He traveled to Sierra Leone in May 2006 to begin his charitable work and was granted citizenship by Sierra Leonean, making him the first African American to be granted full citizenship based on DNA. In recognition for his service in the region, he has been given a chieftaincy of the Mende people, including the regnal name of Gondobay Manga II. His paternal ancestry also ties him to the Mbundu people, an ethnic group in Angola.

Isaiah Washington Career

Career

In 1991, Washington made his debut in Strictly Business before embarking on a string of collaborations with director Spike Lee. Washington appeared in Lee's films Crooklyn, Clockers, Girl 6, and Get on the Bus between 1994 and 1996. He appeared in the films Stonewall, Dead Presidents, Love Jones, Out of Sight, Bulworth, True Crime, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Hollywood Homicide, and Wild Things 2.

On the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy, Washington invented gifted cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Preston Burke in 2005. He was given two NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series as well as a Screen Actor Guild Award for his portrayal. Sandra Oh, who plays intern Cristina Yang, was paired on camera. At first, Washington auditioned for the role of Derek Shepherd, but the role was eventually given to Patrick Dempsey. Burke was first described as a nebbishy, stout forty-something man. Isaiah was named one of "TV's Sexiest Guys" in June 2006 by TV Guide's television guide, and he was named one of the country's sexiest doctors in June 2008. Isaiah was named one of People's "50 Beautiful People" in May 2006 ahead of the TV Guide award. Washington would return to the show in a guest appearance as Burke on March 6, 2014. He appeared in season 10, which was part of Sandra Oh's character's farewell storyline. The characters were not meant to marry when they were first introduced.

In the show's third season, Washington became a central figure in a widely circulated backstage scandal. When debating with Patrick Dempsey, rumors emerged that Washington allegedly insulted T. R. Knight with a homophobic insult. At the time, Knight was not on the set. Knight confessed to being gay shortly after the fact of the case became public. Knight was expected to be outed by the media, according to rumors. The situation seemed to be settled when Washington released a statement apologizing for his "unfortunate use of words during the most recent incident on-set."

"I love gay" when being interviewed on the red carpet of the Golden Globes in January 2007. I wanted to be gay. Please allow me to be gay. "No, I did not call T.R. after the show claimed Best Drama, Washington, in response to press inquiries about any backstage conflicts, T.R. did not call T.R." A faggot is a faggot." However, Knight said that "everybody heard him" in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Washington released a statement apologizing at length for using the epithet in a conversation with Patrick Dempsey after being chastised by his studio, Touchstone Television (now ABC Studios). After making the remarks at the Golden Globes on January 30, 2007, a source told People magazine that Washington was supposed to return to the Grey's Anatomy set as early as Thursday for the first time since undergoing "executive counseling."

However, ABC reported on June 7, 2007, that it had decided not to renew Washington's deal and that he would be barred from the program. In a statement released by Washington's publicist (borrowing the famous line from Network), "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore." In another study, Washington said he planned to "spend the summer doing charitable work in Sierra Leone, work on an independent film, and avoid being worried about the show." In late June 2007, Washington began to suspect that racial profiling in the media was a factor in his dismissal from the series. Washington appeared on Larry King Live on CNN on July 2, 2007, to reveal his side of the scandal. According to Washington, he never used the word "F word" in referring to Knight but rather told Dempsey that he was treating him like a "B-word" and the "F-word" when Washington said he was being lazy and afraid to fight back. He also denied Knight's allegations, saying he denied them out of jealousy over his character.

In July 2007, NBC decided to cast Washington as a guest star in a story arc in its latest series Bionic Women. Ben Silverman, NBC co-chairman, expressed excitement for his opportunity to work in Washington, saying it would be "as A-Rod leaving the Yankees in midseason." However, Bionic Woman was cancelled after only eight episodes due to poor results. Washington said that his exclusion from Grey's Anatomy was an unfortunate misunderstanding that needed to be carried forward. "Burke" on Grey's Anatomy had left the show at the end of the season finale by the time's conclusion.

"I don't worry about whether or not the stories I tell will ruin my acting career, because you can't take something that doesn't exist." "In me," the actor [in me] was killed on June 7, 2007."

In The 100, an American post-apocalyptic drama television series that debuted on The CW Television Network in spring 2014, Washington played Chancellor Jaha. The book is based on a book that was written by Kass Morgan and created by Jason Rothenberg and is based on a Kass Morgan book. In the second episode of the show's fifth season, "Red Queen," Washington's character was killed.

In the film Blue Caprice, which was inspired by the 2002 D.C. sniper attacks, Washington also participated. With Tequan Richmond playing Muhammed's accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo, Washington depicted perpetrator John Allen Muhammad. On September 13, 2013, the film was first shown in theaters.

In 2020, Washington began hosting a travel and cooking show Isaiah Washington: Kitchen Talk on Fox Nation, the Fox conglomerate's streaming service arm, began.
