Irene Jacob Life

Irène Marie Jacob (born 15 July 1966) is a French-Swiss actress best known for her appearances with Polish film director Krzysztof Kieslowski.

She received the Best Actress Award for her 1991 film The Double Life of Véronique, and she was nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role for his 1994 film Three Colors: Red.

The Secret Garden (1993), Beyond the Clouds (1995), U.S.'s (1993). Marshals (1998) and Eternity (2016).

Early life

Irène Jacob was born in Suresnes, Hauts-de-Seine, a french suburb of Paris. Maurice Jacob, her father, was a scientist, psychologist, one brother, Francis Jacob, a drummer, and her two siblings, scientists; she was the youngest child with three older brothers. Irène and her family immigrated to Geneva, Switzerland, where she became interested in the arts at the age of three.

After seeing Charlie Chaplin's films, Jacob became interested in acting. "They took my heart," she recalled. "They made me laugh and cry, and that was just what I was expecting in a film: to wake me to my emotions."

She made her Broadway debut in 1977 at the age of 11. She studied at the Geneva Conservatory of Music and obtained a degree in languages (she speaks fluent French, English, German, and Italian). She also trained at the Drama Studio in London, England. She travelled to Paris in 1984 to study at the prestigious Rue Blanche (the French national drama academy).

Irene Jacob Career

Career

Jacob returned to Paris for his first film role in Le revoir les enfants (1987), where she appeared as a piano instructor. Several French films—mostly minor roles—followed her debut on film in the next four years.

Krzysztof Kielowski, a Polish film director, starred her in the lead role of his film The Double Life of Veronique (1991), the allegorical tale of two young women, one in Poland and the other in France, both of whom are played by Jacob. Jacob received the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for his appearance.

Despite numerous calls from Hollywood during her career, including the lead role in Indecent Proposal, Jacob concentrated on smaller French films from 1992 to 1993.

Jacob gained international recognition for his role in Kielowski's Three Colours: Red (1994), which received three Academy Award nominations for Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Screenplay. The film was also recognized as the Best Foreign Film by the National Board of Review, New York Film Critics Circle Awards, National Society of Film Critics Awards, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards. Best Film, Best Actor (Jean-Louis Trintignant), Best Actor (Irène Jacob), Best Writing (Krzysztof Kielowski), Best Film (Krzysztof Kielowski), Best Actor (Irène Jacob), Best Actor (Krzysztof Kielowski), Best Writing (Krzysztof Kielowski and Krzysztof Piesiewiczton The film was included in the New York Times' list of "The Best 1000 Movies Ever Made" list.

Jacob is a natural introvert who has the ability to convey the emotional turmoil of her characters in a few words. In her appearance in Three Colours: Red, Kielowski's third book, she was particularly apparent. Jacob recalled her fascinating experience with the Polish film director:

Her appearance in Three Colours: Red earned international acclaim, attracting further interest from major American motion-picture studios. Jacob retreated from public view and took nine months off, spending the majority of her time reading Tolstoy, Balzac, Singer, and several autobiographies.

Jacob produced a number of American and European films from 1995 to 1999, with varying degrees of commercial and critical success. She appeared in six films, including Victory with Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill; Michelangelo Antonioni's Beyond the Clouds; and Oliver Parker's adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello, in which Jacob spoke full English for the first time on film. She made several moderately successful American films during the years, including Incognito (1997); US vs. Marshals (1998), starring Wesley Snipes and Tommy Lee Jones; The Big Brass Ring (1999), with William Hurt; and Spy Games (1999), with Bill Pullman and Bruno Kirby.

Jacob's film career slowed down in 2000, and after a string of independent, mainly European films, she revived her theatre career. In Madame Melville, opposite Macaulay Culkin in London's West End in 2000, she played the title character. In 2016, she debuted as a lead character in Season 3 of Showtime's The Affair.

Jacob appeared in a one-hour dramatization of Marguerite Duras' novella La Maladie de la mort (The Malady of Death) at the Edinburgh Festival in August 2018. Jacob played the role of the narrator in the story.

Jacob is the author of the book Big Bang, which was released in 2019.
