Life and career
Roberts was born in Queens, New York, to parents Don and Penny Roberts, but the majority of his childhood was spent in Secaucus, New Jersey, where he moved at age four. Roberts, a 1987 graduate of Grinnell College in Iowa, where he majored in theater. Roberts moved to Milwaukee and then to Chicago, where he became interested in improvisational comedy and then learned improv under comedian Del Close.
In the early 1990s, Roberts and Matt Besser (along with several other Chicago improv comedians) would eventually form the Upright Citizens Brigade sketch comedy troupe. Amy Poehler and Matt Walsh would later join the group, building the UCB foursome who went on to produce their own Comedy Central collection and then opened the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York and Los Angeles. Both theaters have become hotspots for live alternative comedy and improv shows, and in recent years they have aided in the careers of several of today's most popular comedians.
Roberts wrote and starred in Martin & Orloff's limited release film, as well as numerous supporting roles in films such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Bring It On, Talladega Nights, Reno 911. The Semi-Pros in Miami and Semi-Pro to be exact. Roberts was often seen as the UCB Agent Antoine on Comedy Central, but he also portrayed several other sketch characters, such as Steve Youngblood and Astronaut Mike Birchwood. Both Roberts and Martel were showrunners for all five seasons of Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele. They are now executive producers and showrunners of the 2016 TV Land series Teachers.
