Hilary Devey Life

Hilary Lorraine Devey CBE (born 10 March 1957) is an English businesswoman, television presenter, and entrepreneur best known for her two-year appearance on BBC Two's Dragons' Den before she moved to Channel 4's The Intern.

Early life

Devey was born in Bolton, Lancashire, on March 10, 1957. She experienced the aftermath of her father's bankruptcy, when bailiffs confiscated furniture and household goods from the family's house as a seven-year-old girl. Her father used to work in pubs and hotels. She left school at the age of sixteen and spent a short time in the Women's Royal Air Force in air traffic control and accounts; she was stationed at RAF Brize Norton. Devey stayed in London later in life.

Personal life

Devey lived near Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England, but after moving to Boylestone in Derbyshire, she was relocated. She owned a house in London and villas in Morocco, Spain, and Boca Raton, Florida, for a time, but the state acquired a mansion, which she sold in 2014 for £5.42 million. She was married and divorced three times. Mevlit, a girl who, according to her, had successfully overcome heroin use in 2013.

Devey was a Bolton Wanderers supporter and a fan of Rock band Status Quo.

Devey told a story about her mother's discovery, years into her marriage with Devey's father, on October 28, 2012. Devey also discovered that her ex-partner was also married with five children.

Devey served for numerous charities, including Carers Trust, of which she became vice president in 2012. Through her 'Penny a Pallet' campaign, she contributed to charity one penny for each pallet distributed by the Pall-Ex network. She also endorsed the Stroke Association, for which she became a patron in 2010.

Career

Devey made her fortune by launching Pall-Ex, a palletized freight network. Pall-Ex, the third palletized goods distribution network to be launched in the United Kingdom, was launched in 1996. It was based on Palletline's well-established hub-and-spoke express parcel distribution scheme: this sort of pallet network was pioneered by Palletline in 1992.

Pall-Ex operates a palletized consignments through its Leicestershire hub each day, and has more than 90 network members. In 2021, the company had a turnover of £92.1 million, compared to £76.6 million in 2020. In 2021, gross sales were £10.9 million.

In 2008, Devey appeared on many television shows, including The Secret Millionaire, in which she gave more than £70,000 to the Back Door Music Project and the Syke Community Centre in Rochdale. She appeared on Channel 5 in March 2010, a four-part documentary series in which she used her business acumen and expertise to help companies turn struggling small businesses into profitable enterprises.

Following James Caan's departure, Devey joined the BBC Two programme Dragons' Den in February 2011. Later in June 2012, Devey announced that she would be leaving the show as a result of a two-year deal with Channel 4.

Devey's Women at the Top, a joint Open University and BBC Two production, was released in September 2012.

After moving to Channel 4, Devey launched The Intern, a business documentary in which Devey gave three young interns a week's trial in the field of their dreams, in April 2013. The first three episodes were released in the 9 p.m. time slot on Thursday, but the last three episodes were released on Wednesday nights at a later date of 11 p.m., owing to a dramatic decrease in ratings.

Devey announced on April 3rd, 2014, that she would host a new Channel 4 show, which began filming in June 2014. On June 9, 2015, Running the Shop, a running the Shop show, debuted on Channel 4 in the United States.

Devey made her debut on the ITV lunchtime chat show Loose Women in June 2015, becoming an occasional panelist on September 4th. However, she left the show on September 9th.

Hilary Devey began to sell off her £80million property and business empire in 2014 'so her son could inherit her fortune' because she knew she was seriously ill after 40-year smoking habit, friends say

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 19, 2023
After battling a long-running lung disease, the Dragons' Den actress died in Marrakesh at the age of 65 in June last year. However, her cash-free will raise concerns over her £80 million fortune and whether she trusted her only son, a recovering heroin user, with her money and homes around the world. Ms Devey's estate will be worthless. Experts have also pointed out that the figure may not have included any funds she held overseas. Ms Devey advised that the remainder, also known as the residuary, should be held in trust for her only son, Mevlite Brewster-Ahmet. Any types of trust are no longer subject to inheritance tax based on the person's death. Ms Devey, a one-time chain smoker, had a stroke in 2009 that left her with a paralysed arm. Following another health scare in 2017, she quit smoking after being "at least 20 a day for over 40 years." Ms Devey spent years preparing for her death but wanted to ensure a large portion of her fortune was passed on to her son, according to a friend of the actress. "I don't think she ever had that much money," her friend, who refused not to be identified, said. She paid out a little in her last divorce, though she may have given the majority of her money to her son if she knew she was dying.'

Did Hilary Devey's son Mevlit, 37, inherit her mystery millions?Only child of £80m Dragon's Den star who died leaving nothing in her will, is ex heroin addict who shared his mother's bed until he was 10, and has a Turkish businessman father

After fighting a long and difficult lung disease, the Dragon Den's actress died at her luxurious villa in Morocco (inset) in June 2022 at the age of 65. However, Devey's fortune, as well as whether it was inherited, is a mystery after the Daily Mail's Richard Eden revealed that she had not a single penny in her Last Will and Testament, which had been registered with the British authorities in 2021. Hilary earned more than £80 million in cash from a pallet business that was worth more than £100 million a year, and started selling Pall-Ex haulage in January 2020. The mother-of-one, who built her company empire with £110,000 cash earned from selling her modest house and car in the 1990s, has confirmed to having at least four homes in the United Kingdom, Morocco, Spain, and Boca Raton, Florida. But it is not clear if it has all gone to her beloved only child, Mevlit Brewster-Ahmet (left and inset, and right), who she admitted she'spoiled' him as a child while raising him up as a single mother and later spent £500,000 to help him recover from heroin use.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Hilary Devey, a Dragons' Den resident, was haunted all her life after her father, who had owned a central heating company, went bankrupt. She used the experience as a catalyst as she continued to make a £80 million profit from the pallet company that she founded using funds earned from selling her house and car. However, there has been an extraordinary ending to her life story, 16 months after she died in Morocco at the age of 65 after a long illness. I can tell you that Devey left not a single penny in her will.
