Henry Eyring Life

Henry Eyring (February 20, 1901 – December 26, 1981) was a Mexico-born United States theoretical chemist whose primary contribution was in the analysis of chemical reaction rates and intermediates.

Personal life

Mildred Bennion, the bride's widow, married Eyring. She obtained a degree from the University of Utah and served as the head of the physical education department there. While working for a doctorate at the University of Wisconsin, she met Eyring. They had three sons together. Edward M. "Ted" Eyring, the University of Utah's oldest, was an emeritus professor of chemistry. Henry B. Eyring, the second son of the LDS Church, is a general authority, while Harden B. Eyring, the youngest son, is a higher education administrator for the State of Utah. Mildred's wife died in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 25, 1969. Winifred Brennan married Winifred Brennan in the Salt Lake Temple of the LDS Church on August 13, 1971.

Eyring was a member of the LDS Church throughout his life. In this excerpt, Thomas Burke's views on science and faith were captured: "Is there any conflict between science and faith?" There is no difference in God's mind, but there is often confusion in man's minds." Eyring is also concerned that savvy scientists of faith would dismiss new scientific findings due to apparent inconsistencies. He encouraged parents and teachers to choose between "what they know to be true and what they think might be true" and "throwing the baby out of the bath together."

": 245–247

Eyring served as a member of the LDS Church, district president, and, for more than two decades, as a member of the Deseret Sunday School Union. Henry B. Eyring's son is an apostle and member of the First Presidency of the church.
