Dan Shechtman Life

Dan Shechtman (born January 24, 1941) is the Philip Tobias Professor of Materials Science at the Technion Institute of Technology, an Associate of the US Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, and Professor of Materials Science at Iowa State University.

Shechtman discovered the icosahedral phase, which opened the new field of quasiperiodic crystals on April 8, 1982, while on sabbatical at the United States National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C.

Shechtman was named the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of quasicrystals, making him one of six Israelis to have been named as winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Academic career

After receiving his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from the Technion University in 1972, where he later obtained his B.Sc. M.Sc. and Mechanical Engineering, 1966-1996 and M.Sc. Shechtman was an NRC fellow at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, where he researched titanium aluminides' microstructure and physical metallurgy for three years. He joined Technion's department of materials engineering in 1975. In 1981–1983, he was on sabbatical at Johns Hopkins University, where he developed rapidly solidified aluminum transition metal alloys in a joint venture with NBS. He found the icosahedral phase, which opened a new field of quasiperiodic crystals during this research.

He spent 1992-1994 on sabbatical at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where he investigated the effect of the CVD diamond's defect structure on its growth and properties. In the Louis Edelstein Center and the Wolfson Centre, which is led by Shechtman, technology research is carried out. He served on several Technion Senate committees and headed one of them.

Shechtman joined the Iowa State faculty in 2004. On a part-time basis, he currently works in Ames for about five months.

He has been the President of the International Scientific Council of Tomsk Polytechnic University since 2014.
