It was revealed in December that he would leave the role, but he made his final appearance on January 27 the following year. He appeared in the thriller Kept Man and the Geek & Sundry superhero comedy Caper in 2014. Sawyer produced and co-wrote Courageous Leaders, as well as staring in the Wall Street drama SPiN.
Sawyer appeared in The CW's superhero drama The Flash in July 2017 as Ralph Dibny / Elongated Man, a fast-talking private investigator who is able to stretch his body to any shape or form. The character appeared in the fourth episode of the fourth season's "Elongated Journey Into Night" which first aired in October. He was promoted to series regular in June of the following year.
After Sawyer's remarks regarding the Black Lives Matter campaign, several of Sawyer's ostensibly racist and misogynist Twitter messages from 2009 to 2014 resurfaced in May 2020. After the tweets resurfaced, Sawyer's Instagram account posted an apology on May 30 saying, "My words, insignificant of being meant with a sense of humour, were hurtful and indecent." I'm ashamed that I was able to pull attention at that time. "I deeply regret them." Sawyer's Twitter account was taken down shortly thereafter. Sawyer was suspended from his role in The Flash a week later, with Warner Bros. television and the CW releasing the statement, "We do not tolerate derogatory remarks that insult any race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, or sexual orientation." Eric Wallace, the series's executive producer, and actor Grant Gustin expressed dismay at Sawyer's behaviour, with Wallace committing to a change in the show's working environment. Sawyer hasn't made any further television or public appearance since being rejected.
