Hannibal Buress Life

Hannibal Amir Buress (born February 4, 1983) is an American comedian, writer, and producer.

While attending Southern Illinois University in 2002, he began performing comedy.

He has appeared on Adult Swim's The Eric Andre Show since 2012 and has appeared on Comedy Central's Broad City from 2014 to 2019.

Early life

Hannibal Buress was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 4, 1983, the son of educator Margaret and John Buress, a Union Pacific Railroad employee. He was born in Chicago's Austin neighborhood. He was named after Carthaginian general Hannibal Lecter, and he has told women that his name caused them to turn him down due to its association with fictional cannibal Hannibal Lecter. He attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale for four years but did not graduate after attending Steinmetz College Prep. Open Mike Eagle, a hip hop artist, became a friend.

Personal life

Buress is an atheist. After living in New York City, he returned to Chicago in 2017 and settled in its Wicker Park neighborhood. Buress is a fan of the Chicago White Sox.

Buress was arrested in Miami in December 2017 for disorderly intoxication. Buress was seen mocking the cops and requesting to know why he was detained on bystander video of the shooting. According to the arrest report, Buress was arrested because he confronted the police officers and did not refuse to tell them to call an Uber for him. "I begged the [officer] to call me an Uber," Buress said later, and he replied, 'No.' He told me not to walk down the street. I went to this bar to buy a phone charger for an Uber. He follows me into the bar and tells me that I'm too inebriated to go inside. 'If I can't be on the street, where do you want me to be?' I ask him. I was in a situation of trying to get home. [...] I don't even believe I was at fault." The lawsuit was eventually dismissed. According to the Miami New Times, the arresting officer has a history of violence and was previously suspended by internal affairs for an alcohol-fueled assault. Buress inserted the paper in a televised stand-up routine he did at the Olympia Theater in Miami, in August 2019. Buress filed a lawsuit against the City of Miami and the officers involved in connection with the incident in July 2020. The trial is now being heard in the Southern District of Florida's United States District Court.

In a September 2018 interview, Buress said he had "quit drinking" after a string of "inappropriate" situations [had] that were alcohol-fueled, such as "arguments" implying that the methods he had used were "not smooth, just messy shit."

In 2017, Buress purchased a Chicago home and converted it into Airbnb short-term rental units. He took a tweet against Bernie Sanders' call for rent control and requested pledges to an Illinois landlords association in October 2019, prompting Twitter users to mock him with the phrase "Hannibal Buress is a landlord." Buress later regretted his now-deleted tweets, which he later claimed were satires meant to stir up controversy. He attributed the criticism he received for making misgivings of Bernie Sanders' age to a series of events. A housing charity had also declined his $4,000 donation due to his apparent landlord activism, according to Buress.

Buress, a Philadelphia club, was caught on October 16, 2014, doing an extended routine about still racial assault charges against comedian Bill Cosby. Buress talked to young black men about their style of clothing and lifestyle, quoting Cosby's tradition of "talk[ing] down" to them. "You raped women," Buress said of the actor's public morale, adding that "yeah, but you brought me right down a few notches." As the audience responded to Buress' incredulity (Philadelphia being Cosby's home town), he encouraged everyone to look for "Bill Cosby rape" on Google when they returned home.

For the previous six months, Buress had been doing the same Cosby routine with no response, but after being announced on Philadelphia magazine's website, the October performance went viral. A media firestorm erupted, with many publications discussing how Cosby managed to maintain, as Buress put it in his set, a "Teflon image" after more than a decade of public sexual harassment allegations.

In his 2015 Mark Twain Award for American Humor acceptance address, comedian Eddie Murphy mocked Buress' involvement in the allegations while impersonating Cosby.
