He is best known for his role in the comedy Central show Nathan for You.
Early life
Nathan Joseph Fielder was born in Vancouver on May 12, 1983, the son of social workers Deb and Eric Fielder. He attended Point Grey Secondary School, where he was also a member of the school's improv comedy troupe, which also included comedian Seth Rogen. He spent his teenage years as a magician and is a member of The Magic Castle. He studied business at the University of Victoria, where he obtained a BComm in 2005. He went to Toronto and enrolled in Humber College's Comedy Program in 2006. He worked briefly with a brokerage house before deciding to start his comedy career.
Personal life
Fielder was married to a children's librarian from 2011 to their divorce in 2014. On his US green card, he is incorrectly identified as female. He lives in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.
Fielder describes himself as Jewish but "not particularly religious." Both Nathan for You and The Rehearsal have themes connected to modern Judaism, Holocaust denial, and interfaith parenting.
Career
Fielder wrote on Canadian Idol, where he was discovered by Michael Donovan, an executive producer for the CBC comedy series This Hour Has 22 Minutes, after receiving the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award in 2006. Fielder was hired as a field reporter by Donovan, and his recurring feature, "Nathan on Your Side," was created. Fielder wrote and directed a number of sketches for Season 2 of Important Things with Demetri Martin on Comedy Central in 2010. He was also featured as a guest voice actor on Bob's Burgers' Season 2 finale, "Beefsquatch," as well as the Season 6 episode, "The Land Ship." In the "Washington, DC" episode of Comedy Central's Drunk History, Fielder played Jon Benjamin's boom operator in the 2011 television series Jon Benjamin Has a Van, and Bob Woodward appeared as Ben Benjamin's boom operator. Fielder has also appeared on Rick and Morty as a guest star. He appeared in The Night Before and the 2017 biopic The Disaster Artist. In addition, the fielder also has a YouTube channel, largely consisting of short sketches involving him and his colleagues.
Fielder co-created his own comedy Central show Nathan for You in 2013. The show, which he wrote, produced, and starred in, was based on the "Nathan On Your Side" segments from "This Hour Has 22 Minutes." Fielder, playing a person who is largely based on himself, is the show's protagonist, giving tips to local small businesses. The show's fourth and final season came to an end in November 2017.
On the morning of February 7, 2014, a coffee shop named Dumb Starbucks Coffee opened in Los Angeles's Los Feliz neighborhood. The store claimed to be operating as a parody of the multinational coffee company and coffeehouse chain Starbucks, and they had used the chain's siren logo on their banners, cups, and other items. The store ridiculed items common to Norah Jones CDs and bottles by using the word "Dumb" in front of the names, such as "Dumb Norah Jones Duets" and "Dumb Iced Vanilla Latte." Both beverages and pastries were free of charge. A few days later, Starbucks revealed that they were not affiliated with the store and that they were "evaluating [their] next steps" due to the shop's deliberate attempt to mimic the appearance of a legitimate Starbucks location.
The store's identity was not revealed early, and many artists and comedians, including Banksy and Tim & Eric, were expected to be involved in the prank (the latter's production company Abso Lutely Productions had applied for a filming license at the Dumb Starbucks Coffee location). The Los Angeles County Health Department closed the store on February 10, 2014, for not having the licenses that were needed to run a coffee shop. Fielder confessed to being behind the parody, and the Los Angeles Times revealed the prank's similarity to other skits on Fielder's show Nathan for You.
After finding that Taiga, a Vancouver-based firm, had paid tribute to Holocaust denier Doug Collins, Fielder formed Summit Ice Apparel in 2015. He wanted to start his own company and make soft shell jackets. During Season 3 of Nathan for You, this venture was on display. The Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre in Vancouver receives 100% of Summit Ice Apparel's funds. In the first three months, the company had nearly $500,000 in revenues. He opened a pop-up store in Vancouver, where customers of the public could buy Summit Ice Apparel or trade their Taiga jacket for a Summit Ice jacket. The fielder himself operated the register. On-site, a film crew was also on site.
Fielder has signed an overall contract with HBO under which he will act as executive producer for the documentary series How To With John Wilson and write, script, and direct in a separate comedy series. Showtime picked up The Curse, created and written by Fielder and writer Benny Safdie, as well as actress Emma Stone and Fielder. Fielder will write, direct, executive produce, and act in another new comedy series called The Rehearsal in 2021, which Fielder will direct, produce, and star in. Fielder's official description, which came as a result of the broadcast, said that "the opportunity to rehearse for their own lives" is included in the series.
