Dave Thomas Career

Career

He began his career as a copywriter at ad agency McCann Erickson in 1974 and became the head writer of the Coca-Cola account in Canada within a year. He auditioned for the Second City troupe after attending a second stage production in Toronto and suffering from self-described "boredom" in his marketing work. He, along with Victor Garber, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, and Andrea Martin, were all cast members of Godspell's Toronto revival. Paul Shaffer was the musical director.

He first rose to prominence as a cast member of the Canadian television comedy series SCTV, alongside Godspell cast members Levy, Martin, and later Short, plus Rick Moranis, John Candy, Harold Ramis, Catherine O'Hara, and others. Doug McKenzie, beer-swilling brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie, editorialist Bill Needle, Scottish scone-chef/bluesman Angus Crock, motor-mouthed television ad announcer Harvey K-Tel, Lowery organist/curio pitchman Tex Boil, and the "Cruising Gourmet" are among the show's notable characters.

Home to Stay, directed by Delbert Mann, in which Thomas appeared in a scene with Hollywood legend Henry Fonda, was Thomas' first film. He wrote, co-directed, and appeared in Bob & Doug McKenzie's Strange Brew. He wrote about and appeared in The New Show, produced by Lorne Michaels during his absence from Saturday Night Live shortly after. This show was short-lived, and it featured Thomas, Buck Henry, George Meyer, Jack Handey, Al Franken, Al Franken, Tom Davis, Valri Bromfield, and Steve Martin. In 1986, Thomas attempted his hand at network television hour-long programs by writing and co-executing Steel Collar Man for CBS. The pilot was created, but it did not go to serial.

Thomas wrote another hour of CBS, B Men, in 1988, but the network had to cancel the show due to Thomas' absence. In the Paramount film The Experts, John Travolta and Kelly Preston were apparently introduced while directing them.

He wrote for, produced, and appeared in The Dave Thomas Comedy Show (1990). He appeared in Public Enemy #2, a showtime comedy from 1991. He tried his luck on reality television in 1992 and co-executive produced ABC's Funniest People with Vin Di Bona, but he was forced to leave after thirteen weeks to appear in the film Coneheads.

In 1993, he co-starred in ABC's Grace Under Fire with Brett Butler and Tom Poston and continued with the show for five seasons. Thomas appeared in ABC TV movie Picture Perfect with Mary Page Keller and Richard Karn in 1995. Thomas attempted his hand at TV Game shows in 1995 and produced a pilot for ABC's Family Challenge. Thomas appeared in Mr. Foster's Field Trip aka Kidz in the Wood with Julia Duffy in 1996.

He wrote the book SCTV: Behind the Scenes in 1996 (McClelland & Stewart, publishers). He appeared on various television shows Mission Hill from 1999 to 2002.

Thomas appeared in the Paramount film Rat Race. Thomas has been the Executive Creative Director of Animax Entertainment, an animation company headquartered in Culver City, California, since 2001. In 2002, he co-starred with Jason Priestley, Dave Foley, and Ewen Bremner in Fancy Dancing. He appeared in Beethoven's 5th year as the lead. He produced Whitecoats, a hospital comedy feature film that he also wrote in 2003. Thomas was on the official Advisory Committee for Humber College's comedy program, the country's only such diploma program. In Disney's animated film Brother Bear, he and Moranis resurrecting the McKenzie Brothers' voices.

Thomas has worked with animation including Animaniacs, Duckman, CatDog, The Adventures of Tarzan, Justice League of America, and various roles on The Simpsons, King of the Hill, and Family Guy. Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice on Arnold Schwarzenegger's website, Animax Entertainment, received an Emmy Award for a broadband animated series produced for ESPN, Off Mikes.

In a one-hour special, Bob and Doug McKenzie's Two-Four Anniversary for CBC Television, Thomas and Rick Moranis reprised their roles as Bob and Doug McKenzie. Ben Stiller, Dave Foley, Tom Green, Matthew Shaffer, Andy Dick, Matt Groening, Martin Short, and Geddy Lee were among the McKenzie celebrity cameos on the show. Paul Martin, the former Prime Minister of Canada, was the host. In 2008, Thomas McKenzie and Doug McKenzie appeared in a new animated series titled Bob & Doug. Although Thomas recalls Doug's role in the latest film, Moranis chose not to portray Bob, instead being voiced by Dave Coulier. Moranis, on the other hand, is involved as an executive producer in the film.

Thomas was named Honorary Doctor of Letters from his alma mater McMaster University in November 2009 and delivered the fall convocation address. Sean Deanie, a leather trimmer, walked out after being forced to work overtime at Aston Martin's headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, despite speaking out about his back problems. An employment tribunal heard how he never referred to occupational health, had to bring in his sister's hairdressing stool because his office chair did not help him, and was told by lead technician Dave Thomas: "We've all got back problems here."
