Guy Carbonneau Career

Playing career

Carbonneau started his hockey career with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Carbonneau was drafted 44th overall in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, after an incredible 182-point season with the Saeneens. The Canadiens won the Stanley Cup championship in 1985–86, followed by three Frank J. Selke Trophy victories in 1988–1989, 1991–1992. He was a captain of the Canadiens from 1989 to 1990, and they won their second Stanley Cup title against Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings in 1992. In exchange for Jim Montgomery, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues on August 19, 1994. He played for one season before being traded to the Dallas Stars. He won his third Stanley Cup with the Stars in 1998–1999. Carbonneau and the Stars made the Stanley Cup Finals again this season, but the New Jersey Devils defeated them this time. Carbonneau was fired shortly after that.

Carbonneau was one of the more popular Canadiens; fans chanted, "Guy, Guy, Guy." Whenever he touched the puck, he'd be playing for Guy Lafleur (with whom Carbonneau starred from 1982-1985) during his career. He was also one of the Dallas Stars' most admired players. At the Canadiens' last game at the Montreal Forum, he was the ceremonial opening faceoff for the Stars.

Post-playing career

The Guy Carbonneau Trophy (Trophée Guy Carbonneau), which is awarded every year to the player who was deemed the best defensive forward in the QMJHL, was established in 2005.

Carbonneau, who was named as an assistant coach with Michel Therrien for 2000 to 2002, then resigned as an assistant general manager with the Dallas Stars from 2000 to 2002.

Carbonneau took over as the Montreal Canadiens associate coach after Claude Julien was fired and GM Bob Gainey assumed the role of interim head coach on January 14, 2006. After the Canadiens were kicked out of the playoffs, Carbonneau became head coach. He was the 28th coach of Montreal's team.

He was nominated for the Jack Adams Award for the best head coach of the year on April 30, 2008, but fell by 12 points to Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau.

He was fired as the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens on March 9, 2009, with 16 games remaining. He was brought on by general manager Bob Gainey.

Carbonneau, a researcher with CBC Sports Hockey Night in Canada, became an analyst on September 17, 2009. He left CBC during the 2009–2010 season and joined Réseau des sports as an analyst. He appeared in the first season (2010) of La série Montréal-Québec as the head coach for the Montréal team.

Carbonneau, the team he co-owns, became head coach of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens on February 7, 2011. In July 2011, he resigned as a result of his resignation.

Carbonneau was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame on June 25, 2019.
