Early life
Guy Rupert Berryman was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, on April 12, 1978, as the youngest son of engineer Rupert Berryman and his wife Elizabeth, whose family were both merchants and factory owners. He grew up in Beveridge Park, and described his childhood as one with "no good" and exploring the Raith Estate, ending up "lost for days." "I can remember being about six years old and hearing this." He said that listening to Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour" for the first time was one of the reasons why he became so fond of soul music, funk, and Motown, which would later influence his instrument choices: "I can recall being about six years old, having this experience." I had obviously heard music in the background, in the house, and stuff, but it was the first time I ever connected with music on a personal basis."
Berryman's family immigrated to Kent as a project manager, which was the same time in which he started playing bass. He studied at Edinburgh Academy, playing drums and trumpet for the school band. During lessons, he described himself as "a leftie who plays right-handed" and formed a group called Time Out, "everyone was into bands like The Smiths and The Stone Roses, but I wanted to find a music I could identify as my own." It was my form of rebellion. His education at Kent College, Canterbury, continued as he spent his youth years listening to musicians such as James Brown, Kool & the Gang, and Pink Floyd. Berryman started working on a mechanical engineering degree at University College London, where he encountered Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion, resulting in the formation of Coldplay. He did not complete the program, unlike his classmates.
Personal life
Berryman has an estimated wealth of £113 million as of May 2022, according to The Times. He is a well-known Raith Rovers supporter who has expressed an interest in photography, fashion, and electronic technology as well. Joanna Briston, an interior designer, married him in 2004 after six years of marriage. While raising their daughter, the couple filed for divorce three years later, but they remained "very much involved in each other's lives." After being dating Keshia Gerrits for two years, he became engaged to Dutch model Keshia Gerrits in 2014. They have two children and now live in the Cotswolds, where Berryman's workshop specializes in restoring rare cars he bought in the last 15 years.
He took flying lessons and wanted to restore a Spitfire and a Tiger Moth, but then became bored with the process. "I'm a perfectionist when it comes to collecting, so I must restrain myself." At least with cars, you have to have enough space to hold them all in. However, a lot of watches can be thrown into a drawer. Berryman founded Dawghaus, an online catalog aimed at curating "the best in design," promoting already well-acclaimed creations alongside those that "deserve more attention." He is the only Coldplay member to have a separate social media profile.
Career
Berryman was the third member of the band to join the band in 1997. Kris Foof, a college buddy, referred to him as "a quiet young man who had been put in 'Paris Block,' the less populated portion of Ramsay Hall's less populated block. The remainder of the band had been placed in the 'New York Block' but not Guy; he was the outsider who was unaware of it, mainly because of his collection of musical instruments in his room.' When Martin first met, Martin said he had a wrong impression of Berryman: "He's not as scary as he looks" – he's a lot nicer." Guy is the band's darkest member. Everyone agrees that his moody, soft-spoken voice is the best." The group performed demos without a drummer over the next month, and Pectoralz was replaced by Big Fat Noises. He also dropped out his mechanical engineering degree and enrolled in a seven-year architecture program at The Bartlett, which was later discontinued one year to concentrate on playing bass. Although his coworkers obtained their degrees, he still paid his rent by serving as a bartender in a local London pub.
Berryman's memoir, A Head Full of Dreams (2017), described the promotion cycle for X&Y (2005) as a tumultuous period for the band, particularly between him and Martin: "I certainly felt more confident back then, which was a huge pain in the band's assassination process for everyone," the band had. I don't know if I was attempting to escape from myself or if I wasn't comfortable with myself, but I's When asked about Coldplay's development process in an interview for The Howard Stern Show, they said that although Buckland is usually more vocal in condemning or giving his opinion on Martin's initial song suggestions, he would not play it again. On the other hand, he was responsible for starting songs like "Magic" on his own, which was released as the lead single for their sixth album, Ghost Stories (2014).
Magne Furuholmen of A-ha, Jonas Bjerre of Mew, and producer Martin Terefe formed an Apparatjik in 2008. "Ferreting" was their first song to be released as part of Songs for Survival, a charity collection for Survival International. It was also the musical theme for BBC Two's Amazon (2008). The band's debut live set at the 11th CTM Festival in Berlin, Germany, was held. Their debut album We Are Here was released on February 1, 2010 as a digital download on their official website. The group launched Apparatjik World, an iPad app that contained songs that fans could help with. Following ten editions of the series, a new version of Square Peg in a Round Hole (2012) was released, marking their second album and first physical appearance. The band's single "Julia" was released on YouTube on March 20, 2020. However, it's also unknown if or not Berryman contributed to the track, considering he hasn't appeared live with other members since 2011.
In 2019, he and two colleagues and car specialists created The Road Rat, a collectable quarterly magazine that honors classic automobiles. They do not intend to cover on-diary news because the "each issue is supposed to be timeless." Berryman directs the venture from his garage, serving as both the project's creative director and project manager. Applied Art Forms, a fashion label influenced by utilitarian, workwear, and military clothing, launched in October 2020. During an interview with British GQ, he said "form and function are everything," and that, "in designing the core pieces for this collection, I was inspired by the desire to produce clothing that were the consummate representation of high quality and perfect fabrics." Applied Art Forms produces occasional updates rather than following the seasonal fashion calendar. He co-founded Bodyhero, a plant-based products start-up, in the same year. In 2022, his personal collection of clothing (which included Helmut Lang and Jil Sander pieces) was partially donated to Marrkt, with proceeds going to Save the Children's relief efforts in Ukraine.
Berryman appeared on Magne Furuholmen's debut album Past Perfect Future Tense (2004) and also Champion, playing bass on the upcoming A Dot of Black in the Blue of Your Bliss (2008). For the soundtrack of The Longest Night in Shanghai, he wrote "Guy Romance Theme." On the Twisted Logic Tour, his most popular hobby over the years has been photography, shooting candid photos of his bandmates with disposable cameras and then presenting them to the audience later. He was responsible for supplying the photos from A-ha's ninth album Foot of the Mountain's booklet in 2009. During the Music of the Spheres World Tour, he shared exclusive photos from every show they performed with fans. Rik Simpson of The Darktones produced Love You More (2010) and You&I (2011) for The Pierces, a series of instruments including guitar, omnichord, keyboards, and percussion. He was also a member of James Levy & The Blood Red Rose's debut album Pray To Be Free (2012), and he produced DayBreak (2013) for New York-based rock band Hudson Hank.
Berryman is often seen sporting different versions of a Fender Precision Bass, including ones such as Squier, Mustang, Jazz, and Jaguar, as part of a style described as slick and relaxed. The latter was used during the recording session for Viva la Vida or Death (2008). He described the first "proper" bass after joining Coldplay as a Rickenbacker 4001, which can be seen on the music video for "Shiver." Two Ampeg SVT amplifiers, two 15" cabinets, one 8"x10" cabinet, and a Tone Bender pedal for distortion are among his modifications. In 2012, it was announced that he had purchased a custom-made Hiwatt bass rig. The 200-watt amp head was hand-built in the United Kingdom and paired with a 4x12 cabinet loaded with Fane speakers. When asked about his musical tastes, Berryman said that while it was "difficult to convey," he "could not live without The Beatles or Motown." In addition,, he is said to be inspired by artists like James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Kool & the Gang, and The Funk Brothers.
