Early life and education
O'Shea is from Limerick, Ireland. Niall O'Shea and his mother Carol O'Shea (née Ho) were both sprinters for Ireland. Except his maternal grandfather, who is from Hong Kong, O'Shea's family is from Limerick. After World War II, O'Shea's maternal grandfather, Peter Ho, migrated to Limerick from Hong Kong, opening the first Chinese restaurant in Limerick.
When O'Shea was seven years old, he began playing rugby with Shannon's local club Shannon. In Corbally, O'Shea went to Scoil de. He later attended Crescent College Comprehensive.
In 2017, O'Shea obtained a law degree from the University of Limerick School of Law.
Career
O'Shea also won a Munster Schools Rugby Senior Cup with the school in 2013 after beating Rockwell College in the final, having previously won junior Cups in 2010 and 2011. He was also a sprinter, competing for Ireland at the 2011 European Youth Olympic 100m, finishing sixth; in addition to playing rugby, he competed for Ireland at the 2011 European Youth Olympics 100m, where he placed sixth. It was O'Shea's last competitive run, as he opted to move away from athletics and focus on rugby.
O'Shea joined the Munster academy in 2013, mainly wing and fullback. In 2015, O'Shea suffered off a bicycle and laced his Achilles tendon, requiring him to recover fully. Despite the injury, Munster's academy service has been extended for another year. O'Shea was unable to secure a spot on the Munster senior team, and he left the province.
O'Shea joined the Ireland national sevens team shortly after. He competed for Ireland at the 2017 Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series, where Ireland finished second second behind Russia. O'Shea suffered with injuries and missed the 2018 Hong Kong Sevens qualifying tournament, though he did make the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens squad.
O'Shea made the Ireland squad for the 2019 Hong Kong Sevens qualifier, aiding the team in winning the tournament and qualifying for the World Rugby Sevens Series. O'Shea was a member of the Paris 7s team in June 2019. He was selected in August 2019 in Tokyo as part of Ireland's Rugby Sevens squad, which began training in August for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
