Grant Kirkhope (born 10 July 1962) is a British video game composer best known for his creations with Rare, such as Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, GoldenEye 007, and Perfect Dark.

Kirkhope has been nominated for various BAFTA, ASCAP, and IFMCA awards for his contributions to video game music.

Early life and education

Kirkhope was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, where his mother worked as a music hall dancer. Kirkhope's father was a huge music fan and was exposed to early influences such as Frank Sinatra and Glenn Miller. Kirkhope learned how to play guitar at age 11 and is classically trained in the trumpet. Kirkhope was born in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, at the age of five, and he attended King James' School. Since leaving the Royal Northern College of Music, Kirkhope performed in various bands, including Zoot and the Roots and Snake Davis. Kirkhope has also spent many years as a member of "the Big Bad Horns," a UK rock band Little Angels. Kirkhope joined Rare in October 1995, playing for two bands, Syar and Maineeaxe, where he played the guitar and knew Robin Beanland, a rare composer.

Personal life

Kirkhope went to Amalur, Reckoning, to work on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and became a naturalized American citizen in March 2017. He and his family live in southern California as of 2017.

Career

Kirkhope is a BAFTA, ASCAP, and IFMCA-nominated composer who has produced the soundtrack for a number of video games. In the Original Score category in its 2007 awards, Kirkhope's score for Viva Piata was nominated by BAFTA in the Original Score category.

Reckoning was nominated for Best Overall Score, Best Video Game Score, and Interactive Media by the International Film Critics Association in 2012 and Grant was also commended for Best Break Out Composer.

Kirkhope was selected in the 2015 ASCAP Composer's Choice Awards for his contribution to "Civilization: Beyond Earth" and also received the Best Original Score for a Video Game or Interactive Media 2015 from the International Film Critics Association for the same issue. At the Cue Awards 2015, Beyond Earth won Best Score: Video Game. He was nominated for the Best Original Score for a Video Game or Interactive Media 2016 from the International Film Critics Association, and he was also nominated for Best Original Score for a Video Game or Interactive Media 2016. Civilization: Beyond Earth – Rising Tide was also named for Best Score: Video Game at the Cue Awards 2016.
