Giacinto Facchetti Life

Giacinto Facchetti (Italian pronunciation: [date fakketti]; 18 July 1942 – 4 September 2006) was an Italian footballer who competed for Inter Milan from 1960 to 1978. He served as Inter chairman from January 2004 to his death in 2006. He played 634 official games for the club, scoring 75 goals, and was a member of "Grande Inter" under new manager Helenio Herrera, who won four Serie A titles, a Coppa Italia, two European Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. In 1965, he finished second in the Ballon d'Or.

Facchetti has represented Italy on 94 occasions, including three FIFA World Cups. He was also selected to the 1970 World Cup All-Star Team, in which Italy finished runners-up. He was also captain of Italy's first UEFA European Championship on home soil in 1968, where he was also elected to the tournament's team.

Facchetti is regarded as one of the first truly offensive full-backs. He is known as one of the best football players ever to be at his position thanks to his speed, technique, intelligence, physique, and stamina. In Inter's defensive catenaccio system and with Italy's national side, he formed a strong defensive alliance with fellow full-back Burgnich. Facchetti was lauded for his discipline and leadership, and he captained both Inter Milan and Italy for several years, in addition to his playing ability.

Pelé named him one of the top 125 best living footballers in March 2004 as part of FIFA's 100th anniversary celebrations. He was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2015 after being inducted in a posthumously.

Giacinto Facchetti Career

Club career

Facchetti, a native of Treviglio, Lombardy's province of Bergamo (Lombardy), started his career as a forward with his hometown team, GSD Mario Zanconti, owing to his speed, sharp shot, and technique. He was spotted by Helenio Herrera, then-head of Inter, as an attacking full-back on the left in Serie A in the late 1960-1961 season as an attacking full-back on the left, due to his physique, enthusiasm, and tackling skills, as well as his offensive skills; he made his team and top-flight debut over Roma on May 21, 1961. The change of role was an excellent pick, and Facchetti soon developed to be one of Italy's most versatile defenders, teaming up with fellow Italian full-back Burgnich Mario Varadich in defence. Facchetti's versatile playing style, combining hard defense with offensive prowess, was a key component in Herrera's "Grande Inter" system, which dominated Italian, European, and World Football in the 1960s; although not conceding few goals defensively, Facchetti was also able to contribute offensively with numerous goals and assists. With ten goals scored during the 1965-1966 season, he set the record for most goals in a single Serie A season by a defender until it was beaten by Marco Materazzi during the 2000–01 season.

Facchetti spent his entire career with Inter, later captaining the team after Armando Picchi, Mario Corso, and Sandro Mazzola's retirement from the club in 1977-78. Facchetti's team won four scudetti in 1963, 1965, 1966, and 1971; one Italian Cup in 1978; two European Cups in 1964 and 1965; and two Intercontinental Cups in 1964 and 1965. Facchetti also barely missed out on the opportunity to become the first defender to win the Ballon d'Or in 1965, after barely missing out on a treble winning season with Inter; Inter won the Serie A and the European Cup, but Facchetti lost the 1965 Coppa Italia final by Juventus, thanks to his work for Inter. Facchetti's 59 goals in Serie A make him Italy's most prolific defender in history.

International career

Facchetti made his Italian debut on March 23, 1963, beating Turkey 1–0 away in a European qualifier. He was capped 94 times (a record at the time, since Dino Zoff, Paolo Maldini, Fabio Cannavaro, and Gianluigi Buffon) wearing the captain's armband 70 times and scoring three goals between 1963 and 1977, making him his country's ninth-highest appearance holder. He served for his country at the 1966, 1970, and 1974 FIFA World Cups, captaining Italy in the latter two editions of the tournament. Facchetti led the Italian squad to victory at Euro 1968 by wearing the number 10 shirt, after winning the final over Yugoslavia 2–0 during the replay match and being named Team of the Tournament. He was also selected to the Team of the Tournament in the 1970 World Cup, where he helped his team advance to the final of the tournament but was defeated 4–1 by Brazil.
