George Lloyd Life

George Walter Selwyn Lloyd (28 June 1913 – 3 July 1998), a British composer, was born in 1913.

Personal life

George Lloyd's tragic experience of the torpedo strike on HMS Trinidad had a major effect on his mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. He spent several months in the Naval Hospital at Newmachar, near Aberdeen, suffering from shell shock (PTSD), which resulted in uncontrollable shaking of the legs and which recurred for more than 20 years. He admitted that he could not have recovered without the care and concern of his Swiss wife Nancy (née Juvet). His infirmity was the primary reason for his abandoning his full-time musical career in 1951. Lloyd suffered with heart disease towards the end of his life, but he was able to complete his Requiem three weeks before he died in London at the age of 85. "Written in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales," Lloyd penned in the score, his last work.

In 1937, Lloyd and Nancy married. The marriage continued until Lloyd's death. She lived with him for 18 months and the couple had no children at the time.
