Education and early career
Scheer was born in New York City. He earned his Bachelor of Music and Masters of Music degrees at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, as well as a scholarship to the University of Cologne and a Rotary International Fellowship to study at the Hochschule Für Musik in Vienna. He performed as an actor and singer in leading roles at the Theater an der Wien, the Deutsche Theater in Munich, and as Director George Tabori's assistant at the Schauspielhaus in Cologne when he was in Europe.
