Gareth Pugh Career

Career

Pugh began working as a costume designer for the National Youth Theatre at the age of 14. He began his fashion training at City of Sunderland College and completed his Fashion Design degree at Central Saint Martins in 2003. He worked in Paris with Rick Owens. His final collection at St. Martins, which used balloons to emphasize models' joints and limbs, captured the attention of the senior fashion editor of Dazed & Confused magazine, who featured one of his designs on the magazine's front page shortly thereafter.

Two months after graduating, Pugh was chosen to appear in The Fashion House, which he'll later describe as "horrible" and his "only other alternative [to being on] the dole." The rise of!WOWOW!, a Dazed & Confused feature, and Pugh's debut show at Kashpoint's Alternative Fashion Week brought Pugh to the attention of Fashion East, which has compelled them to invite Pugh to attend their Autumn 2005 group show. Pugh's collection took only four weeks, with no studio, no assistants, and little funding. His collection came out as a critical success and attracted significant attention for his designs.

Pugh's solo debut was in London's Fall 2006 fashion week; he has since shown his Spring 2007 and Autumn 2007 collections there. Pugh's appearances have continued to receive critical acclaim. For example, British Vogue called his Spring 2007 collection "an amazing, unmissable show" and that "his genius is undeniable." Anna Wintour is a prominent promoter of Pugh's designs.

Kylie Minogue has used many of Pugh's designs over the past decade, most notablely in her Showgirl - The Greatest Hits Tour and Showgirl - The Homecoming Tour. Róisn Murphy recently wore one of Pugh's unique outfits in the videoclip promoting her 2007 album Overpowered, as well as on the back of her single "Let Me Know" and other occasions. In her 2008 film "In My Arms," Minogue was seen wearing the same outfit. Beyoncé wore Pugh at the MTV Europe Awards in 2008 and "Diva" ad campaign. Lady Gaga wore a jacket made by Pugh at the Wango Tango concert in 2009, another piece on X Factor and most recently to her ARTPOP premier at ArtRave. In her film "Outta My Head," Ashlee Simpson wore a leather and clear plastic striped Gareth Pugh gown. Pet Shop Boys, a British pop band, wore Gareth Pugh clothes at their iconic performance at the 2012 Summer Olympics, with a fresh look based on their post-modern look from their post-modern look from their 1993 Very During Their Popularity.

In 2008, Pugh was honoured with the coveted ANDAM Fashion Award.

Gareth Pugh's first boutique opened in Hong Kong in 2010.

In a song by Kazaky, a Ukrainian dance music group, Pugh was mentioned.

The Fashion Museum in Bath invited fashion journalist and stylist Katie Grand to choose an outfit to represent the year in their Dress of the Year exhibit in 2014. She selected one of Gareth Pugh's ensembles, a wrapped outfit in calico and plastic sheeting.

London Fashion Week models kiss passionately as they showcase risqué cut-out outfits for designer Sinead O'Dwyer

London Fashion Week has always had an edgy and experimental feel but Irish designer Sinead O'Dwyer's show today pushed the boundaries even further. Models dressed in O'Dwyer's signature lattice leggings and skimpy, cut-out dresses not only walked the runway but shared passionate kisses while seated amongst long grass and wild flowers. With their bodies pressed against each other, the models - some with long, flowing hair and others with pigtails - appeared absorbed in the shocking performance on Monday.
