Early life and education
Demna was born in Georgia in 1981 to a Georgian Orthodox Christian family. During the 1992-1993 Russo-Georgian war in Abkhazia, he was forced to live in Tbilisi. From 2001 to 2007, his family lived in Düsseldorf.
Demna studied international economics at Tbilisi State University for four years and then attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he graduated with a Master's Degree in Fashion Design in 2006.
Career
Demna worked with Walter van Beirendonck on his men's collections in 2006.
Demna joined Maison Martin Margiela in 2009, where he was in charge of women's collections from 2009 to 2013. He was first appointed senior designer of women's ready-to-wear collections at Louis Vuitton in 2013, first under Marc Jacobs and then briefly under Nicolas Ghesquière.
Demna founded Vetements in 2014 alongside a select group of anonymous friends who were exhibiting their work in small gay bars in Paris. Demna has claimed that his first aim with the company was to destabilize the brand's high fashion status quo. In 2014, Vetements' first women's ready-to-wear collection was unveiled at Paris Fashion Week. After releasing three collections, the group was nominated for the LVMH Young Fashion Designer Prize.
Demna became Balenciaga's creative director in 2015, succeeding Alexander Wang.
Demna left Vetements in 2019 to pursue new artistic ventures having fulfilled the company's goals, telling Highsnobiety that he had "accomplished [his] mission as a conceptualist and design pioneer."
Demna performed in August 2021 and Kanye West, as the creative director for West's second Donda album listening festival held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, collaborated with him in August 2021.
