Gabriel Daniel V. Norwood (born February 9, 1985) is a Filipino American professional basketball player for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

He played college basketball at George Mason University.

He has been a member of the Philippine national basketball team on multiple occasions.

Personal life

Gabe is the brother of former Denver Broncos wide receiver Jordan Norwood. He has two other brothers: Levi and Zach, and one sister. His father is Brian Norwood, former co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach with the Navy Midshipmen football. He is also the cousin of Alohi Robins-Hardy, a professional volleyball player who plays in the PSL and member of the Philippines women's national volleyball team.

Gabe and his wife Lei (née Feranil) were married in 2013. They have three sons: Cassius, Orion, and Idris.

Norwood is also friends with multiple Fil-Am basketball players, including former teammate Sol Mercado, Chris Ross, Joe Devance, and NBA player Jordan Clarkson.

Norwood is often called 'Mr. President' because of his striking resemblance to former US president Barack Obama and his leadership skills.

In 2019, Norwood, with the help of a Japanese company, created his own manga, Cager Clash. He also has a restaurant, the Naxional South American Diner, and an online food delivery service.

Gabe Norwood Career

High school and college career

Norwood spent his time in several areas of the United States, while his father, Brian Norwood, now defensive coordinator at UCLA, coached various collegiate football teams. He and his brother (Jordan Norwood, a former football player at Penn State, where his father worked until 2007) were a member of the state championship team at State College Area High School in State College, Pennsylvania.

Norwood was named sixth man on the George Mason Patriots' men's basketball team from 2005-2006. He played 35 games, 3.4 points per game, 2.0 assists per game, 1.0 steals per game, and 52.5 percent in 21.1 mins/game.

Professional career

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters' first overall pick in the 2008 PBA Draft. Norwood was the first overall pick. Norwood was the highest-place winner in the Slam Dunk Competition among locals during PBA All-Star Week in 2009. He failed to defeat 2006 NCAA Slam Dunk Champion and Barangay Ginebra Kings import David Noel, who won the same competition but was not one of the imports, but not among the imports. For his promising work inside the court, he received the PBA Rookie of the Year Award from 2008-2009. He was also accepted into the Second Mythical Team.

Norwood earned the Handy Fix All-Star Game MVP in Puerto Princesa in 2010 for his highlight dunks and moves, as well as his baskets in the game's most exciting moments. He had 17 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 steals, and a block. He aided the North All-Stars to a 133-130 victory over the South All-Stars. He spent the year as a member of the All-Defensive Team and named Defensive Player of the Year.

In 2011, he committed to a P8.4 million two-year contract extension contract. During the Governors' Cup the following year, he captured his first championship.

Norwood stepped up with 21 points and six assists to beat Ginebra and advance to the semifinals in Game 3 of the 2012-13 Philippine Cup quarterfinals. They made it all the way to the Finals, where they lost to the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters.' Rain or Shine, the Commissioner's Cup, went on a 5-game winning streak, but Talk 'N Text, the team's sixth straight defeat, brought them to a halt. In the quarterfinals of the conference, they lost to Ginebra. He was in the quarterfinals of the Governors' Cup against the Globalport Batang Pier, who had 17.8 seconds left, losing Rain or Shine to the semifinals. Rain or Shine lost to the Petron Blaze Boosters in the semis. He spent his season as a member of the All-Defensive Team.

Norwood won the 2014 Philippine Cup after taking a pass for Mick Pennisi and making two free throws to seal the victory for Rain or Shine. They and the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers made it to the finals last year. With 0.9 seconds remaining in Game 1, he made an alley-oop pass to Paul Lee, giving Rain or Shine the lead. Lee won with a technical free throw when San Mig sued for the first time with no timeouts remaining. San Mig eventually won the series in the next five games. In the Governors' Cup Finals, the two teams met again. The result was the same as last year, with San Mig winning the first Grand Slam since the Alaska Aces took the first Grand Slam since the Alaska Aces did it in 1996.

Rain Or Shine finished second in the 2015 Commissioner's Cup for the second time against Talk'N Text, but they were unable to win the championship for the second time after a thrilling second overtime in Game 7. TNT was led by Jayson Castro, who was named the Best Player of the Conference, and Ranidel de Ocampo, who was named the Finals MVP.

During the 2016 Commissioner's Cup, Norwood claimed his second title. He was honoured on October 14, 2016, when he was announced to the All-Defence Team at PBA Leo Awards Night. He has been with the team for two years.

Due to a viral infection, Norwood missed some time in the next season. They were unfortunately unable to defend their Commissioner's Cup title. He had 15 points and 11 rebounds in his first game of the Governor's Cup after playing for the national team in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, winning by 37 minutes against the Star Hotshots. In a win over the Phoenix Fuel Masters a few weeks later, he scored 17 points. The San Miguel Beermen disqualified rain or shine in the quarterfinals. He was given the Sportsmanship Award and was a member of the All-Defensive Team and was on the All-Defensive Team.

Norwood was first on the All-Defensive Team in 2018, his sixth straight inclusion.

Norwood made three of his four three-point attempts in 2021, finishing with 15 points, which helped Rain or Shine beat the Terrafirma Dyip. Norwood and his crew had a fruitful season in the Philippines Cup quarterfinals by Magnolia, but not in the Governor's Cup playoffs.

National team career

Norwood was a member of the national basketball team of the Philippines that represented the country in the 2007 William Jones Cup and the FIBA Asia Championship 2007.

Norwood was recalled by Coach Yeng Guiao to the Philippine Training Pool in 2008 for future international competitions. In the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship held in Tianjin, China, he saw action and his team finished 8th overall.

Norwood joined the national team in 2013, this time under the second iteration of the Smart-Gilas scheme. He was an excellent contributor in the team's success in the FIBA Asia Men's Championship, which was hosted in the Philippines, thanks to his athleticism and versatility on both directions of the floor.

Norwood has rejoined the national team of Spain's 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. During the tournament, he went viral for his dunk over Argentinian NBA player Luis Scola. It was one of 32 dunks nominated by FIBA in 2020 for its Dunk of the Decade.

He was also included in the final 12 of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, where the team finished second after losing to China in the finals match. He also participated in the Olympics Qualifying Tournament, losing both games to France and New Zealand in the preliminary round and then failing to progress to the knockout round.

Norwood was also a participant in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon and was the team captain for the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers and World Cup.
