Jordan Clarkson Career

Early life and high school career

Clarkson was born in Tampa, Florida, to African-American Mike Clarkson and Filipina American Annette Tullao Davis. Marcelina Tullao Kingsolver, Davis' mother, was from Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines. Both his parents served in the United States Air Force and divorced when Clarkson was young, with Clarkson's father remarrying Janie Clarkson. At the age of six, he immigrated to San Antonio, Texas.

In San Antonio, Karen Wagner High School was a popular school. While receiving honorable mention all-district accolades as a sophomore, he averaged ten points per game. He averaged 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists per game as a junior, leading his team to a 32-48 record and the Class 5A state semi-finals.

Clarkson received a National Letter of Intent to play college basketball at the University of Tulsa on November 11, 2009.

He averaged 18.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.1 steals as a senior, leading his team to a 38–2 record and a semi-final loss in the state championship. He was also named San Antonio High School Player of the Year.

College career

Clarkson was named to the 2011 Conference USA Freshman of the Week four times in his freshman season at Tulsa. He averaged 11.5 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 24.9 minutes per game in 27 games (nine starts).

He was invited to the All-Conference USA first team and the NABC All-District 11 team in his sophomore season. In 31 games (all started), he averaged 16.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 33.9 minutes per game.

Clarkson left Missouri in May 2012 and then sat out the 2012–13 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

He was named to the 2014 All-SEC second team in his redshirted junior season. In January 2014, he was also named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list and received three Southeastern Conference Player of the Week awards. In 35 games (all started), he averaged 17.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals in 35.1 minutes per game.

Clarkson voted for the NBA draft on March 31, 2014, foregoing his final year of college eligibility.

Professional career

Clarkson was drafted with the 46th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards on June 26, 2014. He was later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on draft night for cash considerations and joined the team in the 2014 NBA Summer League. He signed with the Lakers on August 25, 2014. During his rookie season, he was assigned to the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League, but he did not play for the Lakers for the first half of the season. However, he appeared in 38 games for the Lakers, mainly as a point guard, and averaged 15.8 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.2 rebounds as a starter. In a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 24, 2015, he had his best game in season-best form with 30 points and 7 assists. The pair made history by launching the first Asian-American starting backcourt in league history, alongside Jeremy Lin. Clarkson achieved back-to-back double-doubles on March 30 and April 1, respectively. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team for the season. There had been just four other second-round picks selected to the first team in the previous 30 years. Clarkson, who joined the Lakers in the Philippines, has a large fanbase, owing to his Filipino roots and the team's existing fanbase.

Clarkson lost 120–109 to the Denver Nuggets on November 3, 2015, scoring a career high of 30 points. In a victory over Team USA over February 12, 2016, Clarkson scored 25 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.

Clarkson re-signed with the Lakers on a four-year, $50 million contract on July 7, 2016. Clarkson scored a team-high 25 points off the bench in the Lakers' season opener on October 26, 2016, defeating the Houston Rockets 120-114. In a 125-118 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on November 15, 2016, he had his career-high five steals. In a 118–116 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on March 12, 2017, he tied his career high with 30 points off the bench. In a 130–119 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 24, 2017, he had career highs of 35 points and eight 3-pointers.

Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. were traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Channing Frye, and a 2018 first-round draft pick. Clarkson scored 17 points in his first appearance for the Cavaliers three days later in a 121–99 victory over the Boston Celtics. The Cavaliers advanced to the 2018 NBA Finals, where they were defeated by the Golden State Warriors in four games.

Clarkson won 113-106 over the New York Knicks on December 12, 2018. Clarkson scored 28 points in a 113-106 victory. Clarkson led the Brooklyn Nets to defeat the Brooklyn Nets by 148–139 on February 13, 2019. Clarkson scored a career-high 42 points in a 149–139 triple-overtime loss.

Clarkson was traded to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Dante Exum and two future second-round draft picks. Clarkson lost by 105 to the Denver Nuggets on January 30, 2020, scoring a season-high 37 points.

Clarkson re-signed with the Jazz on a four-year, $52 million deal on November 21, 2020.

Clarkson scored a season-high 40 points in a 134–123 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on February 15, 2021. He started the 2020-21 season by scoring a career-high 18.4 points per game and led the NBA with 203 three-pointers off the bench. He was named the runner-up in the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award for Jazz teammate Joe Ingles. Clarkson was the first Utah player to win the award.

Clarkson had a career-high 45 points on 15-for-21 shooting from the field against the Sacramento Kings on March 12, 2022.

National team career

Clarkson was recruited to play for the Philippine national team in 2011. Clarkson did not meet the FIBA citizenship requirements to be a Filipino citizen as he obtained his Philippine passport after age 16. He is still eligible to play as a "naturalized" player.

Clarkson went to the Philippines in August 2015 on the invitation of Manuel V. Pangilinan to watch Gilas Pilipinas' preparations, in addition to fulfilling his Smart Communications duties as an endorser. Clarkson has had a Philippine passport since he was 12, and so he will not have to go through the process of naturalization to represent the Philippines in international competitions, according to SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios. Clarkson did not make the final cut due to scheduling conflicts with the Los Angeles Lakers. Clarkson was allowed to play, but the NBA collective bargaining deal mandates that national team play should not interfere with the Lakers' team specifications, which didn't take place until October 3. Clarkson expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that he would not represent the Philippines in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship. Clarkson was first included in the 17-man pool for the Philippines' final Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The team nonetheless selected Andray Blatche as the team's naturalized player due to a lack of resources and a complicated eligibility process, but the team decided against him instead.

Clarkson was approved by the NBA in August 2018 Asian Games, which ran from August 18 to September 2, 2018, with a one-time exception. For the first time, Clarkson was able to play for the Philippines. Clarkson led all scorers with 28 points against China in his first game with the national team, but the game came short of 82-80. Clarkson led his team in their second game with the national team, but he was unable to beat Korea. The team was disqualified from a podium finish. Clarkson won his first match with the national team, defeating Japan 113–80 for 22 points, six rebounds, and nine assists. Clarkson won the tournament with a victory over Syria 109–55, giving the Philippines a fifth-place finish in 16 years.

Clarkson scored 27 points in a loss to Lebanon in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers on August 25, 2022.
