Fred Roberts Career

College career

Roberts played four years of college basketball at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah, from 1978 to 1982. He appeared in 119 games, averaged 15.5 points and seven rebounds, and shot 54.6% from the field. During this period, Danny Ainge and Greg Kite, as a player, contributed to the success of the BYU program. Roberts competed with the USA Junior World Championship Team in 1979, alongside greats like James Worthy and leading the United States to an undefeated 8-0 record.

Professional career

In the second round of the 1982 NBA draft, he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks but he continued to play basketball in Bologna, Italy. Roberts was traded to the New Jersey Nets on November 12, 1982 for Phil Ford and a second-round draft pick, and from there, he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for coach Stan Albeck. He appeared in his first complete NBA season with the Spurs following his injury.

He spent just over a season with San Antonio before being traded to the Utah Jazz for two second-round draft picks. The Boston Celtics gave him a two-year contract worth $315,000 in September 1986, which the Jazz matched. The Jazz traded him to Boston for a future draft pick almost immediately after matching the offer. He spent two seasons with the Celtics, starting in the 1987 NBA Finals, before being selected by the Miami Heat in the 1988 NBA expansion draft.

Roberts was signed to the Milwaukee Bucks before ever playing a game for the Heat, but not until they ever saw one for the Heat. He was with the Bucks for five years, where he had his best years as a professional and played more minutes than he had in his career. In 1989, Roberts replaced injured forward Terry Cummings and scored a career-high 33 points in a 96-94 loss to the Detroit Pistons, the highlight of his time in Milwaukee. Since it was against Dennis Rodman, one of the best defenders in the league, the results were particularly impressive. The Pistons, who are primarily defensive, will eventually win the NBA championship later this season. Roberts was cut by the Bucks after his deal came to an end during the 1992-93 NBA season.

He joined FC Barcelona of the Spanish Liga ACB in 1993, where he won the Spanish Cup in his first season, defeating Taugrés Baskonia in the final after not renewing with the Bucks. He had 14.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game on the season.

He appeared for the Chicago Rockers of the Continental Basketball Association during his second stint in Europe. He then signed a 10-day deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and was immediately brought to action due to starting power forward Tyrone Hill's ankle injury. Once Hill returned to action, Roberts stopped playing time, but the Cavs' visit was a stepping stone.

He later signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1995-96 season, but he appeared in only 33 games. Roberts was the first NBA player to play both Johnson and Larry Bird, coinciding with Magic Johnson's "comeback" year. He signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks in the following year, but the Dallas Mavericks fired him almost immediately after Don Nelson was named General Manager.
