Craig Hodges Career

Playing career

Hodges, who was born in Park Forest, Illinois, played basketball at Long Beach State from 1978 to 1982. He was a youth with Tex Winter, who later coached him as an assistant to Phil Jackson with the Chicago Bulls.

Hodges appeared for the San Diego Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, and Chicago Bulls throughout his NBA career. Hodges led the Bucks in scoring with a career high 29 points, including a 27-foot three-point shot, forcing the game to overtime in a 110-108 loss to the Washington Bullets on December 12, 1985. During the seven game series, Hodges played a key role in the Bucks' victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, averaging 14.1 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.3 steals per game. The team would ultimately fall short of qualifying for the NBA Finals after being eliminated by the Boston Celtics in a pattern that has been familiar to the 1980s Bucks. Hodges played for the Bulls from 1988 to 1992, and they helped them win two NBA Championships in 1991 and 1992. He was waived by the Bulls in the 1991–92 season.

He spent a season with Clear Cantù in the Italian league before missing out on the NBA season.

Hodges appeared in the first eight NBA All-Star Three Point Contests from 1986 to 1993, winning the tournament three times in 1990, 1991, and 1992. In 1986, he lost to Larry Bird, and in 1989, when he lost to Dale Ellis in the final round.

Hodges holds the most consecutive shots made with 19 (1991), and is tied for the most points scored in a single round at 25 (1986). He is tied for the most bonus balls made in the semifinal round at 24 (1991) with Hubert Davis for the highest score in the semifinal round (1991). With 61 (1991), Hodges has the second highest three-round combined score (2nd highest three-round total score).

Since being released by the Bulls in 1992 and did not sign with an NBA team for the 1992-1993 season, Hodges competed in the Three Point Contest as a free agent. He was initially turned off from the field of contestants because he wasn't on an NBA roster at the time, but the NBA later allowed him to defend his 1992 title. In the competition, the Hodges wore a generic "NBA" jersey. Following their eventual champion Mark Price and Terry Porter, the Hodges were eliminated after the semifinals.

Career Three Point Contest record

Coaching career

Hodges coached college basketball at Chicago State University from 1994 to 1996, winning 8–51 over two seasons.

Hodges joined the Los Angeles Lakers as a special assistant coach under his former Bulls coach Phil Jackson in September 2005. He worked with individual players on offensive tactics, mainly shooting. After the 2010–11 season, Jackson retired, and Hodges' deal with the Lakers ended as well. Hodges has also coached the Halifax Rainmen in the Canadian Basketball League for half a season, and during his time as head coach of the Rainmen, Dennis Rodman was invited to play in North Korea, but he was refused admission because "I'm for human rights, not for political reasons," and so going to North Korea was not a matter of me rubbing political shoulders with the man in power. It was a goodwill gesture as a brotherhood, a brotherhood of sport."

After being hired as an assistant coach for the Westchester Knicks in the 2014-2015 D-League season, he was named as the team's interim coach for the team's final four games of the season on March 30, 2015.

Hodges, the current head coach of Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois, is now live coach.
