Playing career

Vatrano was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. He competed with the Minuteman Flames' minor ice hockey team in the 2006 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as a youth. He attended Cathedral High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and later joined the United States National Team Development Program. He played for the Boston Jr. Bruins in 2009–10, scoring eight goals before being involved in the United States National Development Team Program. Vatrano, a Boston undergraduate, returned to the Boston Jr. Bruins after starting his college career with the University of Massachusetts Amherst the following season. He canceled his senior year in 2014 to pursue a career in education after completing a three-year entry-level deal with the Boston Bruins on March 12, 2015. He signed an amateur tryout deal with the Providence Bruins, the Providence Bruins' amateur debut, in the 2014–15 season, and it will expires.

Vatrano was recalled by the Providence Bruins to begin his rookie season after spending his first Bruins training camp. Valianto led the AHL in goal scoring with 10 goals in as many games, receiving rookie of the month award honours. He was unleashed on the Bruins for his first NHL recall on November 6, 2015. In a 4–2 road game loss, Vatrano scored his first regular season NHL goal for the Bruins against their long-time rivals, the Montreal Canadiens. Vaino would later score two goals against the Detroit Red Wings, as well as an overtime game champion. Vatrano scored his first NHL hat trick with the Bruins over the Pittsburgh Penguins on December 18, 2015, scoring his first, fifth, and sixth Bruins goals for a 6–2 road victory.

He had 36 goals and 19 assists in 36 games during the 2015-16 AHL season, totaling 55 points. He had three hat tricks before. The AHL revealed the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award for the AHL's top rookie for the 2015–16 season on April 14, 2016.

Vatrano sustained an unexpected injury to his left foot early in the 2016–17 Boston Bruins season, owing to to torn ligaments. Vatrano did not attend the Bruins' preparation camp and pre-season games for his recovery as a result. Vaino scored the first Bruins goal in the second period against the Florida Panthers on December 22, 2016, his first game for the Bruins in the 2016-17 season, and he beat the Panthers 3–1.

The Bruins traded Valianto to the Florida Panthers in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, on February 22, 2018. The Panthers announced Vaino to a three-year, $7.59 million contract extension on February 24, 2019.

Vatrano was traded by the Panthers to the New York Rangers in exchange for a 2022 fourth-round pick on March 16, 2022. He found chemistry with the Rangers straight away, scoring eight goals and 13 points in 22 appearances to close out the regular season. He was a key contributor to the Rangers' promotion to the Conference Finals in the playoffs, contributing with 5 goals and 13 points in 20 post-season games.

Vatrano, the Rangers' free agent, had agreed to a three-year, $10.95 million contract with the Anaheim Ducks on July 13, 2022.
