Fahad Albutairi Life

Fahad Albutairi (born 12 May 1985) is a Saudi stand-up comedian, actor, screenwriter, and political prisoner.

Following the loosening of stringent regulations against criticism of particular aspects of Saudi society, Albutairi became the first comedian to perform on stage professionally in Saudi Arabia and in the GCC.

He is also one of the country's most popular YouTube celebrities. He was arrested in Jordan in March 2018, and was later discovered to be "handcuffed, blindfolded, and loaded onto a plane headed for Saudi Arabia." Loujain al-Hathloul, his ex-wife and a women's rights campaigner, is also detained.

Fahad Albutairi Career

Life and career

Fahad Albutairi was born in Khobar, Saudi Arabia. Albutairi began doing stand-up comedy as a student at the University of Texas in Austin, where he graduated in December 2007. His first essay was about his identity as a Saudi foreign student living in post-9/11 America. He claims he got his first experience at Austin's open mic nights. On October 2nd, Ahmed Ahmed and Maz Jobrani opened in Bahrain with a host of other local comedians as part of the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour.

Since then, he has appeared onstage with Gabriel Iglesias, Sebastian Maniscalco, Bobby Lee, Erik Griffin, Dean Edwards, Angelo Tsarouchas, and Dean Obeidallah. In Saudi Arabia, Albutairi appears on a regular basis. Despite being concerned about how audiences in Saudi Arabia would be treated to stand-up comedy, his first appearance in Saudi Arabia in February 2009 was in Riyadh, which attracted over 1,200 viewers. Albutairi was selected from a field of 65 English-speaking contestants to win the "Be a Part of the Amman Stand-Up Comedy Festival 2009" Award on November 3, 2009.

Fahad Albutairi appeared in Yemen's first-ever stand-up comedy festival, alongside fellow Saudi comedian Khalid Khalifa and Ibraheem Alkhairallah and Egyptian-American comedian Ahmed Ahmed Ahmed. He appeared in the "New Faces of Arab Comedy" showcase at the 2010 New York Arab-American Comedy Festival, and was one of the festival's "Best of the Fest" night.

Fahad Albutairi, the Saudi Arabian "Seinfeld," was awarded by both The Washington Post and The National in March 2013. Fahad was also selected to appear on the panel of judges for the country's biggest online stand-up comedy competition, "The Kit Kat Comedy Break Show."

Fahad Albutairi appeared at the Hollywood Laugh Factory on January 15, 2016, alongside Maz Jobrani, Tony Rock, Steve Hofstetter, and several others. He was the first professional stand-up comedian to appear at the Laugh Factory.

Fahad Albutairi's 2010 debut of La Yekthar Show, a Saudi colloquial term that roughly translates to "put a lid on it." While explaining that his show is solely for YouTube, Albutairi said that "the Hollywood dream is not really applicable in this region, particularly with mega-networks." "In Saudi Arabia, a lot of stuff is done in-house, the casting, the production, and the writing," Albutairi says.

He and fellow Saudi comedian Ibraheem Alkhairallah, who co-creates Albutairi, and Saudi filmmakers Ali Kalthami and Alaa Yoosef founded the YouTube channel. So far, it has been one of the most popular Saudi Arabian YouTube channels, with more than 4,000 followers in its first month and one million subscribers in its third season. It is now one of YouTube's most popular Saudi channels. Over five million views have been received for La Yekthar's most famous video.

Albutairi has said that the show deals symbolically with some socioeconomic and political issues in Saudi Arabia: "Everyone's character kind of represents a socioeconomic problem." These include: graft, symbolized by "a tall guy who wears a shemagh;" jobs are represented by "a guy who wears a ragged thobe and wields a green flag; and traffic issues depicted by "a guy chained to a concrete block, which can be found in road works."

The show's success has enabled the establishment of Telfaz11, a website that distributes online entertainment, and the development of Temsa7LY, a YouTube show that was solely designed for the crocodile puppet character that was first introduced on La Yekthar. Temsa7LY now has over 2 million followers and over 100 million video views.

Since then, Albutairi has appeared on many of the Telfaz11 networks' other YouTube channels, including Khambalah and Folaim. Albutairi departed the Telfaz11 network and stopped his YouTube work in 2016 to concentrate more on his television and film careers.
