Fabrice Muamba Life

Fabrice Ndala Muamba (born 6 April 1988) is an English retired professional footballer who appeared for Arsenal, Birmingham City, and Bolton Wanderers as a central midfielder.

Born in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) Muamba moved to England at the age of 11 and played for England until under-21 level. Muamba began his career in 2002, attending Arsenal's youth academy.

In 2005, he became a professional after three years.

He made his Arsenal debut in the League Cup but he played only one other professional match for the club.

In 2007, after a loan spell with Birmingham City, he made the move permanent.

He stayed with Birmingham City for one year but left after making more than 70 appearances and making his England under-21 debut while with the club.

In 2008, he joined Bolton Wanderers. Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest during a televised FA Cup match between Bolton and Tottenham Hotspur in March 2012, from which he recovered despite his heart having stopped for 78 minutes.

He announced his retirement from professional football in August 2012 after medical advice.

He is a youth coach at Rochdale as of September 2018.

Early life

Muamba was born in Kinshasa, Zaire, (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). His father left the country in 1994 due to his political convictions and landed in the United Kingdom seeking asylum. He was granted unconditional permission to remain in 1999, when the remainder of the family joined him. They settled in east London, where Muamba attended Kelmscott School in Walthamstow. Despite arriving in the United Kingdom at the age of 11, he was unable to speak English and went on to obtain ten GCSEs and A-levels in English, French, and mathematics.

Personal life

When Muamba was a Birmingham City player and he was studying for a master's degree at Birmingham City University, she met Shauna Magunda. They married on February 14, 2012, and they have four children as of June 2021. Muamba has been described as "deeply religious" and that he would have pursued a career in accountancy if not to become a professional footballer.

In July 2012, the University of Bolton awarded an honorary doctorate to Muamba, which the University of Bolton accepted on behalf of those concerned with his life. He appeared in the 2012 Christmas Special Edition of BBC show Strictly Come Dancing.

Fabrice Muamba Career

Club career

Muamba, a schoolboy from 2002, came to Arsenal's youth system as a student, and in August 2004, he began attending the Academy as a first-year scholar. He signed his first professional role in October 2005 and made his first team debut against Sunderland on October 25 in a League Cup match against Sunderland in front of a 47,000 crowd at the Stadium of Light. He made his second and final appearance for Arsenal in the next round, against Reading, where he helped to a 3–0 win.

Muamba joined Birmingham City, on a season-long loan in August 2006. After a slow start, his dynamism, which has been likened to that of his hero Patrick Vieira, landed him as a regular starter in central midfield. The fans were equally impressed, naming him as their Young Player of the Season.

Muamba moved to Birmingham City permanent on May 11, 2007, agreeing to a three-year deal for a fee that was not disclosed by the club. In a 4–2 loss at Portsmouth on March 12, 2008, he scored his first goal for the club, a close-range volley from a corner. Birmingham relegated from the Premier League after one season in the top tier, with 37 appearances.

Muamba joined Premier League Bolton Wanderers for a fee of £5 million, with add-ons worth a further £750,000 on a four-year deal. On March 13, 2010, he scored his first goal for the club against Wigan Athletic. He was named The Bolton News Player of the Season in honor of his outstanding 2009–10 season with Bolton. Muamba signed a new four-year contract with Bolton on August 7th.

In Bolton's 4–0 away victory over Queens Park Rangers on the first day of the 2011–12 league season, Muamba scored on the first day of the 2011-12 league season. In a 2–1 loss, he scored his first goal in the League Cup against his old club Arsenal.

During the first half of an FA Cup quarter-final match between Bolton and Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed. Muamba was moved to the London Chest Hospital's specialist coronary care unit after long being keen on the pitch from medical staff, including a consultant cardiologist who was watching the game as a fan. Owen Coyle and club captain Kevin Davies were accompanied by Muamba in the ambulance. Referee Howard Webb called the game off, and Bolton's next game, against Aston Villa, was postponed at the club's request. There was no protest against Aston Villa.

Muamba had sustained several defibrillator shocks both on the pitch and in the ambulance, but his heart had been on hold for 78 minutes, according to Bolton's club doctor. The player was first in intensive care and under anaesthesia. His heart was pumping without medications as a result of 19 March's transplant, and his legs were able to move his limbs. His illness was later that day described as "serious" rather than "critical," and he was able to recognize family members and respond quickly to questions. Although Muamba's results had "exceeded our hopes," his consultant said by March 21, "normal life is within the range of possibility."

A photograph of Muamba lying in his hospital bed and smiling was published two weeks after the incident. After being fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), he was released from hospital on April 16th. On May 2nd, Muamba attended Bolton's home match against Tottenham Hotspur, where he expressed his appreciation for the help he had received.

On August 15, 2012, Bolton reported that Muamba had resigned from professional football based on his medical team's suggestion.

Muamba said:

Muamba returned to White Hart Lane for the first time since his cardiac arrest on Monday, garnering a standing ovation from the crowd. In Ian Goodison's testimonial match in 2015, Muamba played 15 minutes.

Post-playing career

Muamba was a participant in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations coverage after his retirement from the sport. In addition, he served as a co-commentator with Derek Rae on BT Sport's coverage of the African World Cup qualification third round play-offs.

Muamba obtained a BA in sports journalism at Staffordshire University; as part of his program, he undertook work placement at BBC North West Tonight. He graduated with honors in July 2015.

Muamba did some coaching sessions at Liverpool's academy in March 2015. He coached Rochdale's under-16 team while studying for his coaching licenses in September 2018, and in March 2022, he was announced to be returning to Bolton Wanderers as an academy coach.

Muamba revealed on May 14th that he had returned to Bolton in an Academy coaching capacity.

International career

Muamba, as a naturalized British citizen, was able to participate in one of the Home Nations' three-year full-time training program, in which he had received three years of full-time instruction before the age of 18 or lived in for five years. In Muamba's case, it was just England, who competed at all youth levels and captained the U-19 team. On August 21, 2007, he was called up for England U21's friendly against Romania U-21 in Ashton Gate, Bristol, and made his debut as a second-half replacement.

Muamba had been called up to the DR Congo squad in May 2007, but declined to do so in order to remain eligible for England.
