Fab Melo Career

High school and college career

Melo arrived in the United States in 2008 and enrolled at Sagemont School in Weston, Florida. Melo joined the Syracuse Orange men's basketball team after graduating from Sagemont in 2010. He spent two seasons as a head coach Jim Boeheim at Syracuse, and was a member of the Orange team's 2012 championship team, which went 34-3 overall and 17-1 in the Big East. Melo's campaign consisted of 7.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks. He was banned twice during the season, once for three games during the regular season and again for the NCAA tournament due to academics. Melo's academic status was also a part of the NCAA probe, during which the Syracuse program self-imposed a postseason suspension for the 2014–15 season. Melo said he was failing because he didn't know English. Despite these challenges, Melo was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

Melo declared for the NBA draft in April 2012, forgoing his final two years of college eligibility.

Melo was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 22nd overall pick in the first round of the 2012 NBA draft on June 28, 2012. He signed his rookie scale deal with the Celtics on July 3, 2012. During the 2012-2013 season, he appeared in six games for Boston, but mainly spent the year with the Maine Red Claws in the NBA Development League. He was named to the NBA D-League All-Defensive First Team and All-Rookie First Team at the end of the season.

Melo was traded by the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Donté Greene on August 15, 2013. He was then waived by the Grizzlies on August 30, 2013. Melo signed with the Dallas Mavericks on September 10, 2013, but he was eventually released on October 22.

Melo was purchased by the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League on January 22, 2014.
