Early life and education
Attorney John W. Spiegel and Melissa Ann Thomas were born in Los Angeles, California, to lawyers John W. Spiegel and Melissa Ann Thomas. He grew up in Pacific Palisades, California, where he was raised Episcopalian. He was educated at the Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica and attended Stanford University.
When still in high school and at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Spiegel took design classes before starting Stanford. At Red Bull, he had an unpaid internship in sales. He worked as a student at a biomedical firm as a career instructor in Cape Town, South Africa, and on Intuit on the TxtWeb project. Spiegel is a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Miranda Kerr, a Australian model, was first recognized in 2015. They got engaged on July 20, 2016. On May 27, 2017, they married in a private ceremony in Los Angeles. He bought a 7,164 square foot, $12 million house that had been previously owned by Harrison Ford just a month before Spiegel's marriage to Kerr. Kerr's first child, a boy, was born in May 2018. Kerr gave birth to their second son in October 2019.

Career
Spiegel introduced an ephemeral messaging application in April 2011 as a product design class project. Spiegel and Colum Brown collaborated with Stanford classmates Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown to debut "Picaboo," a play on the term that was later renamed as Snapchat. Spiegel left Stanford to concentrate on Snapchat shortly after completing his degree in 2012, and the app's success soared dramatically. Spiegel's Snapchat app had hit 1 million daily active users by the end of 2012. In 2018, he finished his remaining coursework and graduated.
Spiegel and Murphy agreed in February 2017 to make a tiara of 13,000,000 shares of Class A common stock over the next 15 to 20 years to an arts, education, and youth non-profit. Snap Foundation, a non-profit group whose aim is to support these areas, has been created. "In Los Angeles, they are working to provide pathways to the creative economy for underrepresented youths." They have also donated $3 million to those impacted by COVID-19. The Wall Street Journal announced in January 2017 that after the planned IPO of Snap Inc., Murphy and Evan Spiegel in March 2017, the company will have over "70 percent of the voting power" and own around half of the total number.
