Eric Fenby Life

Eric William Fenby OBE (18 April 1906 – 18 February 1997), an English composer, conductor, pianist, organist, and educator best known for his being Frederick Delius' amanuensis from 1928 to 1934.

He helped Delius produce a number of works that would not otherwise be available. Fenby was born in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and as a youth, he took lessons in piano, organ, and cello.

He was elected organist at Holy Trinity Church at the age of 12.

He was largely self-taught as a composer.

He had written some minor pieces by 1925 and had conducted a string orchestra at the Spa Grand Hall in Scarborough.

Eric Fenby Career

Later career

Following Delius' death, Fenby joined Boosey & Hawkes, a music publisher. He had been hired to write the score for Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn (Daphne du Maurier's book), but the Second World War brought his film career to a halt. Since joining the Royal Artillery, he was posted to Bulford's Education Corps, where he led the Southern Command Orchestra. In Lancashire, he was later recruited to teach Royal Army Education Corps courses.

Rowena C. Marshall, the daughter of a Scarborough vicar), married Fenby in 1944 after leaving the Catholic Church. They had a son, Roger, and a daughter, Ruth.

Fenby established the music department of the North Riding Training College after the war. In 1962, he was the artistic director of the Bradford Delius Festival. He then became Professor of Harmony at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1964 to 1977.

Fenby died in Scarborough after returning to Catholicism in his final years.
