Ephraim Inoni Career

Career

Inoni, an Anglophone and a member of the Bakwery ethnic group, is an Inoni family. In the Southwest Region of Cameroon, he was born in the village of Bakingili near Limbé. He was the Municipal Treasurer of Douala from 1981 to 1982, then treasurer of the Cameroonian Embassy in the United States from 1982 to 1984, then Director of Account Balancing at the Ministry of Finance from 1984 to 1988. He was first named Secretary of State for Finance on April 9, 1992, and then Deputy Secretary General to the Presidency on November 27, 1992, before being elected prime minister in December 2004.

Inoni is a member of the Central Committee of the RDPC. He was part of Biya's election campaign in 2004 and was the chairman of the campaign's support committee in the Southwest province.

On June 30, 2009, Biya sacked Inoni from his position as prime minister by appointing Philémon Yang, another anglophone, to replace him. The reshuffle was the biggest shake up since Inoni's own appointment as Prime Minister. On state radio, twelve ministers were fired (including Inoni and the defense minister), six were transferred and three changed locations, according to President Biya. Public outrage over food costs and the high rate of government abuse in connection with Biya's attempts to get ahead of the next presidential election has resulted in the dismissal, according to Inoni, who was attempting to obtain $140 million in World Monetary Fund assistance, though an official explanation was not given.

Inoni was arrested on April 16, 2012, having been accused of graft during his time in office. President Paul Biya's anti-corruption drive launched by Operation Epevier (sparrow hawk). This arrest was made in connection with Operation Albatross' purchase of the presidential plane in 2003, which had significant defects on its maiden flight with the president couple from Douala International Airport to Paris in 2004. He was one of a number of high-ranking politicians detained amid a crackdown on graft.

In the case commonly known as the "Albatross Affair" in Cameroon, Eim Inoni has been under interrogation behind closed doors by investigating magistrates as part of the judicial process. The Mfoundi High Court in Yaounde had him detained without trial by the time of a pre-trial arrest.
