Eleanor Coerr Life

Eleanor Coerr (née Page; May 29, 1922 – November 22, 2010) was a Canadian-born American writer of children's books, including Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes (historical fiction) and several picture books. She was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, Canada, and raised in Saskatoon. * As an infant, she loved to think up and read new books. * Coerr developed an interest in calligraphy, Japanese cuisine, and origami through her best friend in high school, who was born to Japanese immigrants. * She was introduced to Japanese scenery and told her friend that she wanted to visit Japan for one day, a dream that Coerr fulfilled during the writing of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. * She received a bachelor's degree in English from American University and a master's degree in library science from the University of Maryland. *Coerr began working as a newspaper reporter and editor of a children's column after graduating. * She taught children's literature at Monterey Peninsula College and creative writing at Chapman College in California. She was married to the author of the 1960-1965 United States. Wymberly DeRenne Coerr (1913–1996), the Ambassador to Uruguay from 1965 to his death from Parkinson's disease in 1996. * He was a career diplomat, and his wife went with him to many countries, including Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, and Brazil. * Coerr and Muriel published their first book in 1945, but she didn't publish her book until the 1970s. * Her later publications included children's books, philanthropy, and lecturing at American universities and abroad. * After Wymberly's death, she became more reserved and stayed at private residences in Pebble Beach, California, and Henderson, Nevada. She is perhaps best known for her book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, which appeared in 1977. It told the tale of Sadako Sasaki, who was diagnosed with leukemia as a result of the nuclear bomb's explosions on Hiroshima when she was two years old. *She was told that folding a thousand paper cranes would make her happy, but only folded 664 before she died at the age of 12. Coerr died on November 22, 2010 at the age of 88. Both she and Wymberly were cremated.
