Personal life and career

Robert Munsch was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on June 11, 1945. He grew up in a family of 9 children. He graduated from Fordham University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and in 1971 with a Master of Arts degree in anthropology.

He wanted to become a Jesuit priest but decided against it after being in orphanages and daycare centers. He obtained a Master of Education in Child Studies from Tufts University in 1973. In 1975, he travelled to Guelph, Ontario, to work at the University of Guelph. He has worked as a lecturer and as an assistant professor at the University of Guelph both as a lecturer and as an assistant professor. He was encouraged to publish the many articles he wrote about the children with whom he worked in Esper, Guelph.

Love You Forever, one of Munsch's best-selling children's books, was listed fourth on the 2001 Publishers Weekly All-Time Bestselling Children's Books list for paperbacks, with 6.97 million copies not including the 1.049 million hardcover versions. It has since sold more than 30 million copies and has been included on the television show Friends' episode "The One With the Cake," as well as being listed by Oprah Winfrey on Late Night with David Letterman as her favorite children's book. His other well-known book The Paper Bag Princess has sold more than seven million copies and is widely distributed as a feminist tale as well as a literary masterpiece.

After two pregnancies ended with still-birth, Munsch and his wife Ann discovered they couldn't have biological children. They adopted three children.
