So Big (1924), the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, is best known for her 1926 book, Show Boat, which was turned into a hit Broadway musical in 1927. Several of her other paintings, including Cimarron (1929) and Giant (1952), were turned into award-winning motion pictures.

Before Fame

She briefly studied at Lawrence University before starting her writing career as a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal and The Appleton Daily Crescent. In 1911, Dawn O'Hara published her first book, Dawn O'Hara.
