Earl Boykins Life

Earl Antoine Boykins (born June 2, 1976) is a former American professional basketball player.

He was the second-shortest player in NBA history behind Muggsy Bogues, who was 5 foot, 3 inches tall.

He was the head coach for the Douglas County High School boys varsity basketball team.

He is now serving as an assistant coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Early life

Boykins was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1976. Willie Williams, a 5-foot-old boy, would sneak Boykins into a gym as a kid. Boykins grew up playing in recreational leagues with his father and other mature men. Boykins averaged 24.6 points per game in high school basketball at Cleveland Central Catholic High School, leading the class to a 23-2- record as a senior. The Plain Dealer named him as the top Cleveland-area high school basketball player of the 1990s in 2015. The only two Division I basketball programs to offer Boykins an athletic scholarship were Eastern Michigan and Iowa, though Iowa later withdrew its invitation.

Earl Boykins Career

Pro career

Boykins was never drafted by an NBA team, but he was signed to short-term contracts by five different NBA teams before committing to a five-year, $13.7 million contract with the Denver Nuggets prior to the 2003–2004 season. Boykins scored 32 points in a 117-109 Nuggets victory over the Detroit Pistons on November 11, 2004, making him the youngest player in NBA history to score 30 or more points during a game. The Boykins were traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in January 2007 after three seasons and a portion of a fourth season with Denver. Boykins opted out of his deal after finishing the season in Milwaukee; he later signed with the Charlotte Bobcats partway through the 2007–2008 season and ended the season there.

Boykins was an unrestricted free agent during the 2007-08 NBA season. He didn't want to sign an NBA team and signed a one-year, $3.5 million net income deal with Virtus Bologna of the Italian A League, rather than signing with an NBA team. Boykins was the highest-paid basketball player in the Italian League, as well as income from Bologna's sponsorship and marketing departments, which is not an option for NBA players due to salary caps.

After Boykins returned to the United States in order to see his sick son, Virtus founder Claudio Sabatini revealed on December 26, 2008 that Boykins was suspended from the team due to behavioral issues. However, it was announced that Boykins would remain with the club a few days later, thanks to Virtus general manager Andrea Luchi's involvement. His team won the EuroChallenge Cup on April 26, 2009, defeating Cholet Basket. Virtus first released him in June 2009.

Boykins made his National Basketball Association debut in November 2009 when he signed with the Washington Wizards. After guards Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton were banned for the remainder of the current season after a misdemeanor firearms possession charge stemming from a locker room shooting, Boykins was a much-needed addition to the Wizards. The Boykins won the game against the Milwaukee Bucks on December 2, 2009, after two free throws.

The Bucks signed him to a one-year contract on August 19, 2010. On March 26, 2012, the Boykins signed a 10-day deal with the Houston Rockets. Since being undrafted in the NBA, the Boykins haven't played.

Coaching career

Boykins was hired as the head coach of the Douglas County High School boys varsity team in Castle Rock, Colorado, in 2014.

Boykins was recruited as an assistant coach with the UTEP Miners in 2021.
