Career

O'Brien produced, directed, and starred in a number of short comedies, which he released through his personal YouTube channel before starting his acting career. He was also the drummer for the independent rock band Slow Kids at Play.

O'Brien's acting debut came as he appeared in Teen Wolf, MTV's most prominent film series loosely based on the 1985 film. He was supposed to play Scott but after reading the script, he decided to audition for the part of Stiles instead. He was cast in four auditions and began playing in 2010 and began to act in it.

In 2011, O'Brien was introduced to audiences in the completely improvised independent comedy film High Road. He appeared in the romantic comedy The First Time next year.

He co-starred in The Internship in 2013 while on hiatus from Teen Wolf, and The Maze Runner (2014), starring Thomas Watson.

He was wearing a harness on top of a moving vehicle when he was unexpectedly pulled off the car and hit by another vehicle. His injuries included facial fractures, a concussion, and brain injury. The accident "broke most of the right side" of his face,' he later said; he underwent reconstructive facial surgery. After months of recovery, he began filming other projects, and his return to The Death Cure set in March 2017 marked his complete return to health. On January 26, 2018, the film premiered.

He appeared in the drama Deepwater Horizon, based on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion, which was based on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion. In 2017, he appeared in American Assassin, an action-thriller where he played titular character Mitch Rapp; and in the Transformers spin-off film Bumblebee in 2018.

He appeared in the comedy sci-fi anthology film Weird City in 2019. He appeared in the mystery thriller Flashback (filmed in 2018) and the post-apocalyptic road trip film Love and Monsters in 2020.

He appeared in The Outfit, which was shot in February 2021 and ended in April 2021. He appeared in Not Okay, which was shot in August 2021 and ended in September 2021. He appeared in The Vanishings at Caddo Lake in August and later announced by Discussing Film and Deadline Hollywood in October 2021. In October 2021, it was announced that he would guest star in season 11 of Curb Your Enthusiasm. In Taylor Swift's short film All Too Well, O'Brien starred opposite Sadie Sink on November 12, 2021. He was described as a drummer on Swift's tenth studio album, Midnights (2022), on the track "Snow on the Beach."
