Ramy Youssef (born March 26, 1991) is an American stand-up comedian and writer of Egyptian descent.

Ramy Hassan, a character on the Hulu comedy series Ramy, for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination in 2019.

Early life

Youssef was born in the Queens borough of New York City, Egypt, to Egyptian parents, and later raised in New Jersey. His father became the boss of the Plaza Hotel in New York City ten years after immigrating from Egypt. He grew up in a Muslim household, observeding Islamic holidays, and has continued to practice Islam. Youssef, a student at Rutherford High School, was raised in Rutherford, New Jersey. He began studying political science and economics at Rutgers University, Newark, but he left early to enroll at William Esper Studio.

In which he appeared on the Nick at Nite sitcom See Dad Run, youssef made his acting debut on the Nick at Nite sitcom See Dad Run, in which he had a principal role. Youssef shadowed the writers' room during the show, an insight that Youssef would bring to his own show in 2019. Youssef appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2017, where he did his stand-up routine.

Ramy's television series premiered on Hulu on April 19, 2019 with ten episodes. The series, in which Youssef plays the title role, tells the tale of a young Muslim born in the United States to immigrant parents. Hulu revived it for a second season following a premiere date in 2020. In January 2020, he was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards as both an actor and director.

Ramy Youssef: Feelings, his first HBO stand-up comedy special, premiered in June 2019.

Youssef's debut on Ramy joined A24 as a total television production company. As of December 2019, he has two shows in production, one for Apple TV+ and one for Netflix.
