Dounia Life

Dounia Tazi (born March 31, 1997), known mononymously as Dounia, is a Moroccan-American singer, songwriter, model, and activist.

She rose to prominence as an Instagram model, known for her body-positivity and activism.

She began releasing music commercially in 2017.

Her first commercial EP, Intro To, was independently released on October 20, 2017.

This was followed by her second EP, The Avant-Garden, released on November 30, 2018 through Empire Distribution and her third EP, NOT GOOD FOR THE EGO, released on May 24, 2019.

Her debut album, The Scandal, was released July 17, 2019, preceded by the single "Delightful".

Early life

Dounia Tazi was born on March 31, 1997. It is unclear as to whether she was born in Queens, New York or Morocco. She was sent to Morocco as a baby while her mother stayed in Queens for work. She returned to Queens at the age of 8 and taught herself English by reading books from the local library. Although Tazi grew up playing guitar, she was not exposed to much music in her youth due to her upbringing in a "strict Muslim household", which inspired her to seek out music that she enjoyed during her time in high school. This exploration of music led her to begin writing and recording music of her own, resulting in the release of a diss track about a boy she dated, which she posted to SoundCloud. Tazi began thrifting in high school and started a body-positive Instagram account to model her outfits. After flunking out of high school, she worked for a short time at an American Apparel store.

Personal life

Dounia is Muslim and openly bisexual.

Dounia Career

Career

Tazi started modeling after being accepted as part of a Forever 21 campaign. She gained a following after modeling for other brands, such as Sephora and Refinery29, and established an Instagram account for her unique emphasis on bodypositivity. She later began modeling gigs to fund a career in music, profiting from her internet connections to find a manager and begin producing songs. She had always aspired to move into music during her time as a model. "East Coast Hiding" was Tazi's first commercial single, preceded by "Shyne," which was released in March in a special issue on The Fader. Intro To, her debut 8-track EP, was released on October 20, 2017 in collaboration with Empire Distribution. Time magazine introduced Tazi's "dream brand of rap-sing over vibey, rolling beats, as well as a slew of beats that examines the challenges of beating the grind with its honest, Queens-inspired poetry." In the top ten of the iTunes R&B Chart, the EP charted. In March 2018, Barbie Ferreira's debut on the track "So Cool" was released as the official music video for the track "So Cool." Dounia appeared on two tracks, "WF001" and "Untitled," from Queens rap crew World's Fair's debut album New Lows in July 2018.

In June 2018, Tazi's lead single, "Avante-Garde," was announced in a formal music video. "How I See It," the second single from the series "How I See It," was released in August 2018 alongside a self-directed and self-produced music video. Tazi performed on Supa Bwe's track "Entropy," produced by Shepard Sounds in September 2018. On September 28, a stand-alone single "Everything's a Joke" by Breakfast N Vegas was released. Dounia opened many tour dates around North America in late October, including sold-out shows in New York and Los Angeles. Tazi was on display at Billboard's "Industry Nights" talent showcase on November 15, 2018, where she performed "How I See It," "Avant-Garde," and "East Coast Hiding." A music video for Tired Studio Production and guest-starring Kehlani was posted in advance of the EP's release on November 28. Empire Distribution released the Avant-Garden, Tazi's second commercial EP, on November 30, 2018.

"ROYAL" and "LOWKEY GRL" were two singles released in March 2019. Moroccan Doll, a moniker who is supposed to represent Tazi's alter ego, raps verses in Darija and portrays a "little, unusual Moroccan girl," is featured on "LOWKEY GRL." She appeared on "Run Tings," the lead single from English DJ ROMderful's debut album, in March. Press L to Continue. Tazi's third EP, NOT GOOD FOR THE EGO, was released on May 21, 2019, featuring four tracks, including the lead single "TOXIC," which Prelude Press described as a mash-up of Pop, Soul, and R&B with "sharp, sassy, and unapologetic lyrical content." Dounia performed at numerous music festivals around the country, including BUKU Music + Art Project, SunFest, and the Soundset Music Festival, in spring 2019. The Scandal, her debut album, was released on July 17, 2019, and it includes new tracks as well as those that weren't on Not Good for the Ego. According to Dounia, the album's slogans will shift away from glamorizing a party lifestyle to spirituality and positive ways of coping. The album was preceded by the single "Delightful," which was available for streaming and download alongside the album's pre-order. "Royal," "Lowkey Grl," and "Toxic" were among the album's previous singles, in comparison to Not Good for the Ego's "Up 4 Air" track. Tazi appeared at Diplo's Mad City Festival on July 20 and is scheduled to appear in Rolling Loud Bay, California, on September 28 as part of her festival tour.

Dounia was a featured performer on Marian Hill's album "Take A Number," which was released in its music video on August 23, 2019.
