They auditioned for America's Got Talent's sixth season in 2011 and finished fourth, eventually finishing in fourth place. Judge Piers Morgan told Kehlani, "You've got real talent, but I don't think you need the group."

Kehlani left PopLyfe after the conclusion of America's Got Talent because of several managerial and contractual issues. They did not do anything music-related to avoid being sued by the company's board over six months. Kehlani was practically homeless between house and apartment in 2012 and 2013, often sleeping on couches. They went to Los Angeles, California, without a single legal guardian during their senior year of high school. Nick Cannon, the host of America's Got Talent during PopLyfe's tenure, called Kehlani in 2013 to ask about being in a rap group. They agreed at first and moved to Los Angeles, but they didn't like the company's course and relocated back to Oakland. They decided to start stealing iPhones and foods from grocery stores for a short time to help with money and food. "ANTISUMMERLUV" is Kehlani's first solo album on SoundCloud, a month later. After hearing the song, Cannon regained control and bought them an apartment in Los Angeles, as well as studio time.

The studio time in 2014 culminated in the unveiling of Cloud 19's first mixtape. Kyle Dion's appearances on the mixtape are included on the program. They were also sent by Cannon to New York City to work with record producer Jahaan Sweet. The mixtape debuted at number twenty-eightth on Complex's list of the "Best Albums of 2014" and was also included in Pitchfork's "Overlooked Mixtape's 2014," a tally named list of the Top 100 Best Albums of 2014. Billboard selected "Till the Morning" as one of the week's "Emerging Picks of the Week" on November 7, 2014. On the second leg of his From the Bay to the Universe tour, Kehlani opened for American rapper G-Eazy.

They released their second mixtape You Should Be Here on April 28, 2015. When it debuted at number 5 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, it was dubbed the "year's first great R&B album." Chance the Rapper and American singer BJ the Chicago Kid appear on the show. They announced that they had signed a record contract with Atlantic Records a week after the initial announcement. They went on the You Should Be Here tour, which sold out every North American date and selected European dates in favor of the Mixtape. They also received individual accolades throughout 2015: Complex named them one of the "15 Artists to Watch Out For In 2015," and Rolling Stone named them one of the "10 New Artists You Should Know" in 2015. They were also nominated for the Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2016 Grammy Awards. Kehlani appeared on "Wrong" from his debut solo studio album Mind of Mine in March 2016. The band "Gangsta" was included on the soundtrack of Suicide Squad's August 2016 hit film Suicide Squad, which gave them and their music some much-deserved attention as it reached number 41 on the Hot 100.

On November 26, 2016, Kehlani unveiled the name of their debut studio album SweetSexSavage, which was released on Atlantic Records on January 27, 2017. Kehlani's debut on American rapper Eminem's "Nowhere Fast" from his ninth studio album Revival in December 2017. On December 18, 2017, Kehlani's third annual Tsunami Christmas tour arrived in Santa Ana, California.

Kehlani opened the Tell Me You Love Me World Tour in North America, which began on February 26, 2018 and ended on April 2, 2018. The Hopeless Fountain Kingdom World Tour, directed by Halsey, began in August 2018. Kehlani appeared on American singer Charlie Puth's single "Done for Me," from his second studio album, Voicenotes, in March 2018. They were featured on American rapper Cardi B's single "Ring," Cardi B's debut studio album, Invasion of Privacy, in April 2018. Kehlani's first top 40 entry on the Billboard Hot 100 debuted at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the song's first top 40 debut on the chart.

Atlantic Records' third commercial mixtape While We Wait was released by Atlantic Records on February 22, 2019 and debuted at number nine on the US Billboard 200. In its first week, the mixtape had 34,000 album-equivalent units. Singles "Nights Like This" starring Ty Dolla Sign, "Nunya" starring Dom Kennedy, and "Butterfly" are among the tracks that support it.

On September 27, 2019, Kehlani and Russian-German DJ Zedd released a joint single titled "Good Thing." On November 1, 2019, Kehlani and American singer Teyana Taylor released a single titled "Morning."

Kehlani was featured on Canadian singer Justin Bieber's promotional single, "Get Me," from his fifth studio album, Changes, on January 28, 2020. For Bieber's Changes Tour, they were also supposed to be a support act, alongside American rapper and singer Jaden Smith, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour was delayed to 2022 and renamed the Justice World Tour to promote Both Changes and its successor, Bieber's sixth studio album, Justice (2021), but Kehlani was no longer an opening act. On May 8, 2020, Kehlani's second studio album, It Was Wonderful Until It Wasn't, was released. It debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, based on 83,000 album-equivalent units earned (including 25,000 copies of pure album sales).

Kehlani recorded songs for the deluxe version of It Was Fine Until It Wasn't. However, after the session, they decided that the songs would be better on their own album and began composing on their third studio album, Blue Water Road. Kehlani teased the preview for Blue Water Road on September 14, 2021, a year later this year. On September 15, the album's lead single "Altar" was announced. On February 24, 2022, the second single, "Little Story," was released. Kehlani revealed on Instagram on March 24 that their album would be released on April 29. The singer's third single from the album, "Up at Night," starring Justin Bieber, was released the following week.
