Dorothy Canfield Fisher Life

Dorothy Canfield Fisher (February 17, 1879 – November 9, 1958) was an educational reformer, social activist, and best-selling American author in the early decades of the twentieth century.

She is a big believer in women's rights, racial justice, and lifelong education.

Eleanor Roosevelt named her one of the ten most influential women in the United States.

In addition to bringing the Montessori method of child raising to the United States, she presided over the country's first adult education service and influenced literary tastes by serving as a member of the Book of the Month Club selection committee from 1925 to 1951.

Personal life and death

Sally, her daughter, was born in 1909. She married John Paul Scott and they lived in Bar Harbor, Maine. Sally Scott had published 18 children's books by 1958. Vivian Scott, Canfield Fisher's granddaughter, also writes children's books.

James (Jimmy) was born in 1913 and became a surgeon and captain in the United States Army during World War II. He was with the Alamo Scouts for three months at the end of 1944, when he was assigned to a Ranger unit that carried out the mission to free POWs held in the Philippines's Cabanatuan. The Raid at Cabanatuan was a huge success, with the Rangers suffering only two deaths. Captain Fisher was one of the deadliest victims of a mortar shell blast. "Did we get them all out?" as he departed the next day. He died on January 31, 1945, Luzon.

Canfield Fisher died in 1958 in Arlington, Vermont, at the age of 79. The husband died in the ensuing year.
