Donald P. Bellisario Career

Television career

Bellisario developed some of their production methods, for example, using a small pool of actors for his numerous projects after working under such television directors as Glen A. Larson and Stephen J. Cannell. Magnum, P.I., Airwolf, Quantum Leap, JAG, and NCIS were all developed or co-created by him. He served as a writer and producer on Black Sheep Squadron and the original Battlestar Galactica. Last Rites, he wrote and directed the 1988 feature film.

Many of Bellisario's protagonists are current or former members of the US armed forces. In Magnum, P.I., Tom Selleck's character. In Quantum Leap, a former Navy Academy graduate and Vietnam warfighter, and former Naval Intelligence officer; Jan-Michael Vincent's character in Airwolf was a Vietnam veteran; and NCIS' chief, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, was a former Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant and former Naval Aviator; and Monty Jethro Gibbs, Jr., was a retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant and veteran; and the original Several of his main characters' birthdays are scheduled on August 8.

Bellisario appeared on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004, which was also seen in "Trojan Horse" by Season 9 JAG. Bellisario said he was inspired to design Quantum Leap in 1988 after reading a book about time travel in an interview with Sci-Fi Channel in the late 1990s. The Quantum Leap fifth season double-length episode "Lee Harvey Oswald," co-produced by John F. Kennedy's assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald, was the basis for Lee Harvey Oswald's appearance (originally broadcast on September 22, 1992).

Bellisario resigned in 2007 after a lot of drama surrounding actor Mark Harmon's departure from NCIS. Despite the fact that he maintains the name executive producer, he hasn't had any real creative or executive involvement with NCIS since then. Bellisario later sued CBS over the development of NCIS: Los Angeles, alleging that his employment with the network entitles him to the first right to produce any NCIS spin off, as well as a s share of the company's earnings. The lawsuit was settled before the 2011 trial for an undisclosed sum. After the Roman general Belisarius, of which "Bellisario" is an Italian-language version, Bellisario's production firm was dubbed "Belisarius Productions."
