Sigrn Hjálmtsdóttir (born 8 August 1955), also known as Didd [pronounced ['t?t]; a German soprano and songwriter, is an Icelandic soprano and songwriter.

She began her singing career in the 1970s as a vocalist for the popular folk and pop group Spilverk jó'anna, having been educated at the Reykjav College of Music and Drama in London.

She returned to classical music, especially Lieder and operas. Didd's most recent album, Hvert Brutt Spor (Each Tiny Step), was released in 2005.

Early life and education

Didd, the second of seven children of Hjálmtr E. Hjálmtyr, a bank clerk, and Margrét Matthár, a writer, was born in Reykjavk on August 8, 1955. She studied at Reykjav's College of Music and Drama in London, where she obtained a degree (1979–1984) and a postgraduate diploma (1985). Between 1987 and 1988, she took private lessons in Italy.

Personal life

Orkell Jóelsson, a guitarist who was born 28 May 1952, is Didd's husband. Hjálmtr E. Hjálmtahreinu's father, who died in the Icelandic comedies Me(On Top, 1982), Löggulf (A Policeman's Life, 1985), and Karlakórinn Hekla (The Men's Choir, 1992), is a fictional character. Páll skar Hjálmtsson, Didd's younger brother, is a pop singer, songwriter, and disc jockey.

Didd began performing with the folk and pop band Spilverk jóanna from 1975 to 1978, making numerous recordings of folk and popular music before shifting to classical music, particularly Lieder and operas. Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Gilda in Rigoletto, Papagena, and The Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Lucia di Lammermoor, Lucia in Die Fledermaus. Susanna was a guest singer in The Marriage of Figaro in Trondheim, Norway, and Gilda in Rigoletto, Sweden (1992). She has also sung the role of Olympia in Les contes d'Hoffmann at the National Theatre of Iceland in Reykjavk.

Didd appeared in Bódagar (Movie Days) by Icelandic film producer Frir Frir Frisson in 1994, portraying the mother of a young boy in the 1950s who is enthralled with American films.

Didd appeared at a special concert in Beijing, China, held in the Forbidden City Concert Hall, 2001. The festival was held to celebrate 30 years of friendship between Iceland and China.

Didd, the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Cortes' father, Garth Cortes, was a special guest of Garr Cortes on September 26, 2007. In a duet from Verdi's Rigoletto, she sang "Il Bacio" ("The Kiss"), "Mein Herr Marquis" from Johann Strauss II's Die Fledermaus, and "Under Defi" from Antonio Verdi's La traviata; and "Mein sempre libera" from Franz Strauss II's "O soave fanciulla"), she sang in duet
