Club career

Birkir played football for local clubs in Akureyri, Romania. His family immigrated to Norway in 1999 and he was part of the Figgjo youth team. Birkir became a Viking in the summer of 2005. He scored his first goal for Viking against Hamarkameratene in the 2006 season. He continued as a starter for Vikings and was instrumental in the club's success this year and their help with their third-place finish under new coach Uwe Rösler.

Birkir's most recent loan period, Bod/Glimt, culminated in them finishing second in the league in 2008. During January 2008, his appearances at Serie A club Reggina attracted the attention of larger clubs, but he remained with Viking until 2012. During this period, he made 100 appearances for Viking in the Tippeligaen, scoring 16 league goals.

Birkir would join Belgian Pro League team Standard Liège on a five-year contract, according to a press release on December 12, 2012. He appeared in 16 league matches in the Belgia Pro League for Standard.

Birkir joined Pescara, the newly promoted Serie A side, in July 2012, following a season-long loan contract, with the option to sign a new €900,000. In a 5-1 away loss at Napoli, he scored his first goal for Pescara. He did not want to go down to Serie B with Pescara after the 2012–13 season, and with two years remaining on his Standard Liège deal, he was uncertain where he would be playing in the 2013–14 season.

Pescara acquired Birkir from Standard Liège on a permanent transfer for a previously agreed fee, with the intention of selling him at a higher price in the top leagues in England, including Italy and Germany, with much more interest being reported in the summer.

Sampdoria, a Serie A side, had signed Birkir on a co-ownership agreement, which was announced on September 2nd, 2013. During the 2013–14 season for Sampdoria, he made 14 Serie A appearances.

Birkir will return to Pescara on July 1st, 2014, after the club secured the co-ownership auction for the player from Sampdoria. He had been named captain for the 2014–15 season at signing.

He scored 12 goals in 38 Serie B games to help Pescara reach their seventh-place finish and qualifying for the Serie B playoffs. Pescara defeated Perugia 2–1 to qualify for the playoff semi-finals. They defeated Vicenza Calcio 3–2 over two legs in the semi-finals, with Birkir scoring the crucial match winning aggregate goal for Pescara on June 2nd to help them qualify for the Serie B playoff final against Bologna. However, two legs Bologna, the highest-placed team, was promoted with a 1–1 aggregate score after two legs.

Pescara announced on June 27th, 2015, that they had accepted a €1 million bid for Birkir from Serie A side Torino. The transfer was later revealed in July that it had seemingly stalled as Birkir had been unable to reach personal terms with the club. Leeds United's transfer to England went wrong.

Birkir had signed a three-year deal with Swiss Super League club FC Basel on July 7, 2015, the first of which was revealed on July 7th. In a 3–2 away victory over the Grasshoppers on July 25, he made his first team league debut on July 25, 2015. During the 1–0 home victory over Lech Pozna, he scored his first goal for his new team in the Champions League third qualifying round on August 5th.

During Basel's 3–1 home victory over Lugano, he scored his first league goal on September 26th. Urs Fischer Birkir, the Swiss Super League's current manager, won the Swiss Super League championship in the 2015-16 Super League season. It was the club's seventh title in a row and their 19th championship title in total.

Birkir announced on January 25, 2017 that he had signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with English Championship side Aston Villa. In an EFL Cup match against Wigan Athletic on August 22, 2017, he scored his first goal for Aston Villa.

Birkir returned to Italy on January 18th, 2020, after signing a 1.5-year deal with Brescia in Qatar, where he appeared for Al-Arabi for a brief period.

He joined Turkish Süper Lig club, Adana Demirspor, on August 13, 2021. On the 18th of September 2021, he scored his first goal in the Süper Lig against aykur Rizespor.

International career

In 2010, Birkir made his debut for the senior Iceland national team. He holds the all-time appearance record for the senior team, which stands at 105 caps. He has also represented them at Iceland U-21, Under 19, and Under 17 levels.

In a 3–2 loss, he scored his first goal for Iceland against France on May 27. He then continued this up with goals against Iceland in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying with goals against Slovenia on October 12, 2012, Slovenia on October 7, 2013 and then Albania against Albania on September 10, 2013 in a 2–1 triumph. Birkir's goals and performances helped guide Iceland to the World Cup qualifiers, but they lost 2–0 on aggregate over two legs to Croatia in November 2013.

He was called back to the national team for UEFA Euro 2016 and earned the honour of scoring the equalizer against Portugal in their first group match.

As Iceland defeated England with a 2–1 victory in the UEFA Euro 2016 round of 16 at the Stade de Nice on June 27, 2016, Birkir played against England in the UEFA Euro 2016 round of 16 challenges, as Iceland defeated England and advanced to the quarter-finals.

He was selected in Iceland's 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia in May 2018.
