Aron Gunnarsson Career

Club career

Aron, a native of Akureyri, began playing football on gravel pitches in his homeland Iceland. Football pitches were unplayable during the winter months, with snow and ice, Aron played handball instead, making three appearances in the Icelandic handball League at the age of 15. He began his football career with local side Akureyri in 2005, and after investment in indoor pitches by the Icelandic government, he began training all year round. At the age of seventeen, Aron moved to the Netherlands, joining the youth academy in AZ. He arrived in the country and made his debut for the club in the 2007–08 season after struggling with homesickness.

Aron signed with English Championship team Coventry City on June 17, 2008, a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee. He made his debut against Norwich City on Sunday, where Coventry defeated 2–0. In an FA Cup match against the Premier League side Blackburn Rovers, he scored his first goal in his career. Aron attracted Premier League attention while at Coventry City, causing Coventry City to offer him a new contract on March 12th. Crystal Palace was his first league goal against. Aron was named the Coventry City Supporter of the Year and the club's Community Award at the end of his first season in England.

Aron shifted his shirt number from 12 to 17 to match the squad number of his brother, who is a professional handball player, following the season. He continued to play as a key part of the Coventry midfield throughout the season and scored one goal against Middlesbrough.

Coventry City's 2011–11 season started off with a soaring demand for play-off positions. Despite Coventry losing 3-1, Aron started his season's goal scoring against Millwall, who were newly promoted. He scored his first goal at Coventry City's home ground, the Ricoh Arena, against Preston North End, after three years at Coventry. Aron scored his second goal in two games against Doncaster Rovers three days later. Aron was out of work at the end of the season, and he expressed his desire to remain in Coventry on December 10th. However, he received his first red card of his career against Norwich City the following week. However, a new contract could not be reached between his agent and Coventry, and the club gave him a deadline date if they wish to remain.

However, Aron and his agent were linked with moves away, and his rep said that rival Championship outfit Cardiff City were favourites to sign him due to Aron and his agent's inability to reach an understanding with Coventry.

Gunnarsson completed his three-year contract with fellow Championship team Cardiff City on a free transfer on August 8, 2011, making him the fifth signing for new boss Malky Mackay. He was given a commission because he was under the age of 24.

In the 1–0 away victory over West Ham United, he made his debut on August 7th in the first game of the new season, playing the full 90 minutes. Aron limped off with an ankle injury in his second match against Bristol City after only ten minutes against Bristol City, the injury sidelining him for a week. He returned from the international break in September, claiming that his illness was behind him. Aron scored two goals in a 5–3 victory over Barnsley on Sunday, earning the man of the match award.

Aron was in the entirety of the 2012 Football League Cup Final, after City was defeated 3–2 on penalties by Premier League club Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.

Aron scored Cardiff's first goal in the Premier League against Manchester City in a 3–2 victory on August 25, 2013. He signed a new deal with the club in June 2015 until the summer of 2018.

Following his return from Euro 2016, Aron was linked with a change away from Wales' capital, with Derby County and Norwich City showing an interest. However, Cardiff City manager Paul Trollope described him as "a very important player" to the club. Despite Trollope's success and his eventual replacement Neil Warnock, the club's Player of the Year Award was given to him at the end of the season.

Aron continued to struggle to establish a consistent starting eleven position in the first half of the season the following season. Cardiff gave him a new deal despite his injury problems, but the player turned down his offer. Aron returned to the side for the final run-in, where he scored the winning goal against Nottingham Forest and then helped Cardiff gain promotion to the Premier League.

Aron signed a new one-year contract in July 2018.

Aron will leave the club at the end of the season and joins Qatar Stars League club Al-Arabi in March 2019. He joined Al-Arabi in July 2019. He extended his deal by an additional year in June 2022.

International career

On February 2, 2008, Aron made his international debut for Iceland. Aron was selected to the 2011 European Under-21 Championship Iceland squad, which took place in Denmark. Iceland defeated Denmark 3–1 in the first match. Aron was sent off for two years after losing by 2–0 to Belarus. Iceland was kicked out of the tournament by a tie breaker due to the two losses. Aron has been a regular fixture in the senior ranks since his debut, despite representing the United States Under-21 Championships, which helped the U-21 team qualify for the UEFA Under-21 Championship.

Before a friendly match against the Faroe Islands in August 2012, Aron was named as the national captain of the team, ahead of his 29th cap. Iceland qualified for the play-off round of FIFA World Cup qualification for the first time under his captaincy, losing 2–0 on aggregate to Croatia.

Aron scored his first senior international goal in Iceland's 3–0 away victory over Latvia in UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying on October 10th. In a 2–1 victory over the Czech Republic on June 12, he scored once more. He was dismissed in the last minute of a goalless draw at Laugardalsvöllur, Reykjaván against Kazakhstan on September 6, a result that put Iceland into their first major international tournament.

At their first big international tournament, Aron captained Iceland at UEFA Euro 2016, which took place in France. Against skipper Cristiano Ronaldo's refusal to change shirts with him in the dressing room after their first match, a shocking 1–1 draw with Portugal in Saint-Étienne. After beating Austria and drawing against Hungary, Iceland then defeated England in the round of 16. In the quarter-finals, they were defeated by France, 5–2. In all five games, Aron appeared.
