Dianne van Giersbergen (born 3 June 1985 in Liempde) is a Dutch spinto soprano singer-songwriter and vocal coach.
She is the founder and frontwoman of Dutch progressive metal band Ex Libris, and she was the vocalist of German symphonic metal band Xandria from 25 October 2013, to 13 September 2017.She is not related to Dutch singer Anneke van Giersbergen.
Early life and education
Dianne van Giersbergen received her first singing lessons as a birthday present from her parents at the age of four. In the following years, she was taught by several professors and sang in several choirs. In 2005, she began studying classical music at the ArtEZ School of Music where she focused on classical singing and musical theater. In 2009, she received her degree with honors.
Meanwhile, she expanded her vocal technique and began to combine her classical training with heavy metal music. She also worked on the theory of composition, wrote poetry and organized classical music concerts.
Career
Dianne van Giersbergen and drummer Joost van de Pas formed Ex Libris after graduating from the ArtEZ school with a bachelor and master's degree and perfecting the combination of classical techniques with progressive metal music.
In 2009, the Aygdala, their debut album, was released. Critics and followers alike loved the album, and the band began to appear as help for performances of other Dutch symphonic metal bands, such as Epica, Delain, Stream of Passion, or ReVamp. In addition, the band appeared in shows around the world, including Germany, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, where the band first gained notice.
Medea, the band's second album based on a Greek tragedy, was released in January 2014 and financed solely by crowdfunding.
Ann Boleyn, Anastasia Romanova, and Anne Frank's third studio album Ann – A Progressive Metal Trilogy appeared in 2019. The trilogy "Chapters" (each made up of three songs) about three female historical figures who died untimely (Ann Boleyn, Anastasia Romanova, and Anne Frank) appeared on their third album, Ann – A Progressive Metal Trilogy, was released in 2019.
Following Manuela Kraller's departure, Dianne van Giersbergen was announced as the new lead singer of the German symphonic metal band Xandria on October 25, 2013. It was her first live debut with Xandria in Madrid, Spain, on November 28, 2013. Sacrificium, the band's debut album, was announced on May 2nd, 2014.
Fire & Ashes, her second collaboration with Xandria, was released with seven tracks on July 31, 2015: three new songs, two remakes of well-known Xandria hits, and two cover songs.
Theater of Dimensions, her third and current work with Xandria, was unveiled on January 27, 2017.
She left Xandria due to personal reasons and differences with the other band members on September 13th.
