Simone Johanna Maria Simons (born 17 January 1985) is a Dutch singer-songwriter.
She is best known for her role as the lead singer of Dutch symphonic metal band Epica, where she joined the age of seventeen and released seven studio albums and touring the world.
She has performed with artists including Kamelot, Leaves' Eyes, Primal Fear, Ayreon, and Angra throughout her career.
Early life
Simons was born in Hoensbroek, Netherlands. Janneke, Simone's second birthday, is her younger sister. Simons cited her musical influences as Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Tristania, Kamelot, Within Temptation, Dimmu Borgir, Tiamat, and some classical music such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Simons began playing flute for two years after starting music school at the age of 12. She had one year of pop singing lessons at 14, and after listening to Nightwish's Oceanborn, which remains her favorite Nightwish record, she switched to classical singing at 15. She was invited to attend a black metal band's rehearsal at one point, but she was a little reluctant to sing. Simons sang in a choir for a few months and then joined Epica at the age of 17.
Personal life
Simons was suffering from recurrent MRSA infections in January 2008. Epica had to cancel several of their shows due to this. Her health improved in February, but she hadn't fully recovered. Epica toured in March with Amanda Somerville, swapping Simons for their United States tour until May 8, 2008, where Simons appeared again at their show in Bibelot, Dordrecht.
When asked about her appearances as one of the reasons that attracts attention to Epica, Simons replied: "First and most important is the sound of the band, because beauty will fade one day, and I hope my voice will not [Laughs]..." Well, you have two aspects of the band: the music (the CD's) and then the live side of it (the show), and part of the performance is that it must also look good, so I take good care of myself.
Simons and longtime friend, Kamelot keyboard player Oliver Palotai, have a son, Vincent Palotai, who was born on October 2nd 2013. Simons revealed on her blog that she had recently married Palotai. They are from Stuttgart, Germany. She had a personal relationship with Mark Jansen in the past; the friendship came to an end in 2005, shortly after the introduction of Consign to Oblivion. When Jansen was looking for a musician for a side project, Simons first met him over the phone, he gave him a positive vibe.
Simons has a blog titled "SmoonStyle" where she writes about her fashion, makeup, food, and experiences as a member of Epica, as well as in her personal life.
