Devon Franklin Life

DeVon Franklin (born April 13, 1978) is an American filmmaker, best-selling author, a well-known preacher, and motivational speaker.

He is best known for his films Miracles from Heaven, Heaven Is for Real, and The Wait, a best-seller book written by Meagan Good in New York City.

"Most Influential Christians Under 40," Variety Magazine named him one of the "Top ten Producers to Watch," and Ebony Magazine has named him one of America's Top 100 Influential African-Americans.

Early life

Franklin was born in Oakland, California, and the son of Donald Ray Franklin and Paulette Franklin. Donald Ray and David Brandon are Franklin's two brothers. Both the couple would eventually separate, and Paulette and her three young boys were relocated to her parent's house. Franklin's father died at the age of 36 after suffering a heart attack a few years ago. In the absence of their father, his mother, grandmother, and his seven siblings all formed what Franklin has described as a "coalition" of strong women who aided him and his brothers in the absence of their father.

Franklin wrote about his upbringing in a 2016 Mother's Day essay: "While she did make sure we had strong males in our family's life, including my grandfather and my uncle," my mother said, she wanted more than that." My mother's suggestion was to form an alliance of women, the same women with whom she was raised. They were always an integral part of her family's life, and they became an integral part of our family life, even more so after my father died. These nine women (my mother, Grandmother, Aunt Nuna, Aunt Ida, Aunt Announce, Aunt Chrystal, and Aunt Sondra) were not only the village that would raise us, but also the foundation of who we would be as adults.

Franklin threw himself into academics and activities as a way to cope with the loss following his father's death. This will lead to his passion for theater and his love for movies and television. He'll check out how stories and scenes were put together in the hopes of learning how to move and inspire people by entertainment as a youth, as the way The Cosby Show and The Color Purple inspired him. In addition,, he began helping out at his uncle's church and preached his first sermon at the age of 15.

Education

Franklin earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and a minor in Cinema-Television at the University of Southern California in 2000.

Personal life

Franklin is a Seventh-day Adventist. He now lives in Los Angeles. In 2011, he began dating actress Meagan Good, whom he married in Malibu, California, on June 16, 2012. Prior to marrying, the couple proclaimed that they were chaste. Franklin had filed to divorce Good in December 2021, after nine years of marriage. In June 2022, the couple's divorce was finalized.

Devon Franklin Career

Career

Franklin began his career as an Intern at Overbrook Entertainment, working for Will Smith and James Lassiter as an intern. Following his graduation from USC, Franklin accepted a full-time job at Overbrook. Following this, he spent time as a junior executive in Tracey Edmonds' company Edmonds Entertainment.

Franklin began to transition into Hollywood's production system in 2003 when he took up a creative executive role at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Franklin's book, Produced by Faith, recalls his involvement in helping with MGM's latest efforts, including John Travolta's 2005 crime-comedy Be Cool. "I managed to make a difference despite being the lowest man on the corporate ladder" following my decision to seek value and contribute wherever possible."

However, MGM's time there would be short lived. Sony Pictures Entertainment bought out MGM in 2005, despite months of rumors. Following the sale, Franklin was given a job and taken on as a Director of Development at Sony's Columbia Pictures.

Franklin will be in charge of a number of Columbia's hit films, including The Pursuit of Happiness, Hancock, and Seven Pounds. Not only will his work lead to his eventual promotion to VP at Columbia, but it will also be a full circle moment for Franklin, who will work with his former boss and mentor, Will Smith, in making these films.

Franklin discussed how The Pursuit of Happiness showed him what was possible for his work in Hollywood and inspired him to make films that encourage audiences to go after something. "I want people's hearts to be touched, their lives to be touched, and I want the evidence of that to be present at the box office," he said.

Franklin oversaw a number of projects while VP of Columbia Pictures. He appeared in The Pink Panther 2, The Unashable Truth, The Unbreakable Truth, and Whitney Houston's Sparkle (both 2012) and the faith-based film Not Easily Broken. According to The Hollywood Reporter, not only did he promote box-office hits such as The Karate Kid and Jumping the Broom, but he was also listed as one of the youngest and most influential executives under the age of 35. The NAACP named him as a Top ten Business Impact Player, among other things.

Franklin continued to rise in Columbia's ranks in 2012, becoming Senior Vice President of Production, making him one of the youngest executives in the industry to hold such a position. Franklin conceived and directed the production of new commercial content, as well as honed his attention for urban and faith-based markets with films like the diversified remake of Annie and the sleeper.

Heaven is for Real, one of Franklin's first ventures as Senior Vice President, was turned into a full-length film. Franklin was immediately engulfed by the book and the message; he helped develop the script and oversaw the entire process. "I wanted the film to be] a message of hope to those who have lost loved ones and those who may be wondering what happens next," he said. DeVon, who lost his own father at a young age, wanted audience members who could relate to the Burpo family to walk away with a sense of hope, stability, and inspiration. Heaven is for Real outst all estimates and earned more than $100 million at the box office, making it one of the highest-grossing faith-based films of all time.

Franklin's final project during his time as a studio executive was the reimagining of the classic story "Annie," alongside Sony's Ange Giannetti, who has since found a mentor during his time as a mentor. He wrote the script, put the film together, oversaw development, and even helped promote the film when it was being announced.

Franklin said in promoting the film, that "for the first time, we're doing 'Annie' with a diverse cast" and portraying modern day New York with a different flavor. Annie believes she will discover her parents one day and then finding her family in a way she never imagined. I think that the tale is particularly relevant for today as it has for previous generations. Because 'Annie' is one of those classic stories that have lasted for decades, it has always been a thrilling tale about faith, about the power of family, and family.' This reimagining of the classic tale is sure to be as relevant for this generation as it has for previous generations.

Franklin Entertainment formed Franklin Entertainment in July 2014, as part of Sony Pictures Entertainment's first-look production contract. Franklin Entertainment is a multi-media corporation in which Franklin currently serves as president and CEO. The corporation signed a new multi-year, first-look, production deal with twentieth Century Fox, where it is now based.

Franklin produced Miracles From Heaven, based on Christy Beam's book Miracles from Heaven. Jennifer Garner, Queen Latifah, Kylie Rogers, Martin Henderson, John Carroll Lynch, and Eugenio Derbez appear in this American Christian drama. The film tells the true tale of Beam's daughter, who suffered from a rare, incurable disease, but she is miraculously cured after a freak accident. The film was released for $13 million and, although receiving mixed feedback from critics, it took home $73 million at the box office around the world. It was nominated for Favorite Dramatic Movie in the People's Choice Awards, Best Actress in the Teen Choice Awards, and it was named for the Best Movie for Drama in the Teen Choice Awards Choice.

The animated film The Star, directed by Franklin, was produced by Sony Pictures Animation. Timothy Reckart, an Oscar nominee, had the film directed. While following The Star and becoming accidental heroes, this faith-based film based on the Nativity Story focuses on a donkey and his friends on an adventure. Kelly Clarkson as Leah the Horse, Oprah Winfrey as Deborah, Tyler Perry as Cyrus, Steven Yeun as Ruth the donkey, Keegan-Michael, Kristin Chenoweth, Kristin Cohen, Zachary Levi, Tracy Morgan, and Tracy Morgan were among the actor's who appeared on the show in 2017 as Kelly Clarkson, Oprah Winfrey as Deborah, Kevin Hart as Deborah, Anthony Perry as Ruth the donkey, Kelly Clarkson

Franklin also has several film projects in the works, including Breakthrough for 20th Century Studios, which tells the true story of John Smith, who died in Lake St. Louis and was unresponsive for almost an hour. Smith's mother came into the room yelling and then Smith had a pulse. He's also directing the film adaptation of Cathy Byrd's book "The Boy Who Knew Too Much." Franklin is also working on the revival of He-Man and the Masters Of The Universe with Columbia Pictures, as well as the MGM's adaptation of the film Cooley High With Common. Franklin is releasing a reimagining of Foxy Brown at Hulu, starring his wife Good.

Franklin said he began preaching at the age of 15. He is a regular on The Dr. Oz Show, giving his advice on a variety of topics including faith, marriage, and spiritual health. He has appeared on Dr. Phil, CBS This Morning, Entertainment Tonight, Oprah's Super Soul Sunday, and was named to Oprah's SuperSoul100 list of visionaries and influential executives.
