Margret Wander (born May 23, 1981), better known by her stage name Dessa, is an American rapper, singer, and former record executive.

She is a member of Doomtree, an indie hip hop group.

Early life

Dessa was born to Robert Wander Jr. and Sylvia Burgos Toftness, and she has a younger brother, Max. Her father is white and her mother Puerto Rican. Dessa graduated from the IB Diploma Programme in 1999 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She earned a B.A. from the University of Minnesota, where she earned her B.A. Philosophical philosophy. She waited tables and worked as a technical writer for a medical device before becoming an artist full time.

Dessa formed a friendship with Doomtree, initially drawn to their raw aesthetics and unique sound. She was asked to join the crew shortly and did so. Dessa has performed on all Doomtree albums and some of the other members' solo albums since 2005. She was the CEO of Doomtree, but she redirected the job to her colleague, Lazerbeak, to concentrate on her own career.

False Hopes, Dessa's debut solo EP, was released in 2005. Despite being only fifteen minutes long, Minneapolis Star Tribune named it one of the year's best local albums of the year.

On January 19, 2010, Dessa's first solo album, A Badly Broken Code, was released. "Dixon's Girl" and "The Chaconne" were two of the album's singles. Paper Tiger, MK Larada, Lazerbeak, Cecil Otter, and Big Jess have all contributed to the album. The album artwork was also created by MK Larada.

Dessa released Castor, the Twin, a remix album with new arrangements of songs released on previous projects, mainly A Badly Broken Code. Live instrumentation was used to replace the original sound in the remixed tracks.

Dessa's second full-length album Parts of Speech debuted on Billboard's Top 200 in 2013. "Warsaw" and "Call Off Your Ghost" are two of the album's singles.

Dessa's third full-length album Chime, which made its debut in Billboard's Top 200 and ranked number one on Billboard's Best 200 and ranked third on Billboard's Billboard's Independent Charts, debuted on February 23, 2018. Chime was one of NPR Music's Top 40 Favorite Albums of 2018 (so far).

She appeared with the Minnesota Orchestra on March 26, 2019, and the collaboration resulted in a live album being released in November 2019.

Dessa released "Rome," the first title in her IDES Series, on January 15, 2021. The IDES series is a series that will debut a new single on each 15th for the first half of 2021.

Dessa unveiled Spiral Bound, a seventy-page collection of fiction and poetry at the fourth annual Doomtree Blowout in 2008, as well as Doomtree Press. Following that, A Pound Of Steam, a collection of poems from Rain Taxi, was published in 2013.

Dessa was interviewed by the Francis Golden Literary Agency in 2018 and launched her collection of imaginative non-fiction essays titled My Own Devices: True Stories from the Road on Music, Science, and Senseless Love on September 18, 2018. The book is an uncompromising and candid account of her life in motion, in music, and in love, and was included in NPR's Best Reads for 2018.

In The New York Times Magazine, Dessa's work has also appeared in periodicals, including a 2009 poem in Ars Medica and a 2017 story about visiting New Orleans as a tourist.

Dessa is a founder of The Boy Sopranos, a nearly all-female cappella group, with frequent collaborators Jessy Greene, Aby Wolf, and others. She has studied at the Institute of Production and Recording as well as the McNally Smith College of Music. She and Ryan Olson, along with 22 other musicians, including Justin Vernon, became members of the indie supergroup Gayngs, which was formed in 2010 by Ryan Olson (of Poliça fame).

Dessa presented "Mic Lines: Art, Ethics, and Their Contested Links" at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on March 2, 2012, as part of the three-day Nobel Peace Prize Forum.

Dessa was the host of The Lowertown Line, a live music series on Twin Cities Public Television from 2012 to 2014.

In 2012, she worked with the "artisan cosmetic house" from Minnesota, Elixery, to create her own shade of lipstick, the proceeds of which were donated to CARE (relief agency).

She was a contributing artist on the "Plume Project," a public art project in which images and colors were projected onto steam rising from a smokestack in downtown Saint Paul and music and spoken-word pieces, which could be accessed by dialing a phone number. "Circle Games" was Dessa's poem.

"Dessa's Existential Crunch" was a brand of ice cream named after her on July 27, 2016. She appeared on The Hamilton Mixtape in the same year as she covered the song "Congratulations." Dessa collaborated with RockFilter Distillery in Spring Grove, MN, to create two bourbons, Dessa's Time and Distance, and Dessa's Hand Shadow.

Dessa has been involved in the popular fiction podcast Welcome to Night Vale as both a contributing writer and musical guest. Her first appearance was on "Weather" segment of Episode 27, "First Date," which featured Doomtree's "Team The Best Team." She appeared on "Call Off Your Ghost" for its weather segment on Welcome to Night Vale's second anniversary live show. "The Bends" as the weather for episode 121, "A Story of Love and Horror, Part 2: 'Spire,' she appeared on Doomtree for episode 61, "Briny Depths" as its weather; her single "Fire Drills" was the Weather for episode 122, "A Tale of Love and Horror, Part 2: "Spire." She co-wrote and appeared in episode 113, "Niecelet," lending her voice to the character Sabina.

She headlined a show with the Minnesota Orchestra in April 2017, which featured new interpretations of her songs as well as a a tale told in prose. She continued her set of appearances with two sold-out shows in October 2018, this time debuting new content from her album Chime. Dessa will return to the Minnesota Orchestra for two more performances on March 26 and 28, 2019, the same dates were set to be announced later this year in cooperation with Doomtree Records.

Dessa performed the National Anthem at the Minnesota Twins home opener on April 5, 2018. On July 28, 2018, she performed the National Anthem at the 2018 WNBA All-star game in Minneapolis on July 28, 2018.

Dessa was on a two-week, five-stop tour through South Africa in August 2018, the first tour of an American orchestra to the region, according to sources, and they assisted with Minnesota Public Radio's trip with MPR journalist and cultural critic Euan Kerr.

The United States has a federal population. During her presidential campaign in 2020, Senator Amy Klobuchar performed "Bullpen" by Dessa's song "Bullpen."

Dessa is the host of the podcast Deeply Human. The show delves into questions of the inner self and delves into the psychological, genetic, and anthropological explanations of our common characteristics. Episodes are based on her personal experiences in discovering the truth of her own thoughts and behaviour. Deeply Human was launched in March 2021 and is a coproduction of the BBC World Service, American Public Media, and iHeartMedia.
