Life and career

Wholey, the son of an attorney father and a librarian mother, received a B.A. In 1959, the Catholic University of America obtained a degree. On WBAI-FM, he began his media career as a tour guide for NBC in New York City and then as the host of a radio talk show entitled The Age of Involvement. He also produced and hosted a television talk show on WNDT-TV in New York. Wholey began working at WKRC-TV in Cincinnati in 1969, where he hosted The Dennis Wholey Show, which was syndicated to television networks around the midwest, including Taft Broadcasting Company sister station WTVN-TV in Columbus. On ABC, he was the emcee of a short-lived game show, The Generation Gap.

Wholey moved to Detroit, Michigan, from 1973 to 1977, as well as a similar program, Morning Break on WDVM-TV in Washington, D.C., in 1977 and 1978. Dennis Wholey, a late night television show on PBS Latenight in Detroit from 1982 to 1985, which PBS heavily distributed in Detroit. Dennis Wholey of PBS, a late-Night America host, appeared on LateNight America with Dennis Wholey beginning in 1989. Dennis Wholey has been hosting This is America & the World since 1998, which is distributed nationally by NETA (on PBS and independent public television stations) and the AmericanLife TV cable channel.

One of Wholey's interview shows a "outstanding program" in the Midwest, and he was honoured with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) Gold Mike award for AM Detroit, according to Radio/TV Mirror magazine. Wholey started his career as an author in 1984 with the book The Courage to Change: Hope and Support for Alcoholics and Their Families, which was in high demand and on the New York Times bestseller list for several months. The book chronicled Wholey's battles with alcohol and valium addictions, which reached dangerous proportions in the 1970s before he found help in an alcoholics' support group. In addition, the book included interviews with other recovering addicts, including former Congressman Wilbur Mills, rock musician Pete Townshend, Monty Python's Graham Chapman, and trumpeter Doc Severinsen.

Are You Well? follows The Courage to Change with a book that explores the sometimes elusive nature of happiness. (1986): Those Answers to the Most Important Question in Your Life (1986). The book featured interviews with chefs Julia Child, reporter Helen Thomas, actress Ruby Dee, and critic Cleveland Amory. The Solution for Adult Children of Alcoholic and Other Dysfunctional Families (1988) by Wholey's third book Becoming Your Own Parent: The Solution for Adult Children of Alcoholic and Other Dysfunction Families (1988) focused on dysfunctional families, but there was also some information about Wholey's own often difficult childhood.
